Money Laundering

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Money Laundering

Post by Goonanana »

With all these extremely rich businessmen with allegedly dodgy backgrounds suddenly interested in buying football clubs, has anyone considered Money Laundering as a motive?

As we all know, one of the major problems for people making a lot of money through illegal or unscrupulous means is that there is an inherent difficulty in spending this money without getting caught. Now the only way around this is making the money clean i.e. Laundering it. For example, you buy a ferarri with £100,000.00 of dirty cash, take it back the next week for a refund and voila you have £100,000.00 of lovely untraceable money from the good honest people at ferrarri - ok bad example but you get the idea

Now take Arsenal for example:

Turnover of £200 million pounds and a pre-tax profit of around £5million. Thats 195 million pounds which has vanished on wages and loans etc and come back as lovely clean money from spectators, legitimate TV companies and honest people buying merchandise.

Is there any other business in the world where so much money comes in and out every week guaranteed? Also is there any other business where people won't ask so many questions as to why you dont mind losing some money - you've got an easy answer, "i love the game"!

Would you swap £30million of dodgy money (no transfers mentioned) that could have you thrown in the slammer for £25 million of sweet smelling honest UK pounds?

Makes you wonder

True, goonana ...

all the more reason that the govt should take interest in the trend of ownerships of british clubs. Even uefa and other notable football people have raised concerns about this, but it seems our government is not interested at all.

I'm quite sure these people are using football clubs as a "legit" means to pass dodgy foreign money around, and dont like it one bit..Come to think of it, there's not one owner of any of the PL teams I'd want anywhere near our club..Apart from Steve Gibson- a local lad putting his own money into the club he loves, which in theory, the majority of our shareholders can relate to, apart from recent tradings of course..

a very simplistic view,, maybe a future english duma might try and retrive the current directors ill gotten money, money that was handed down to them but im sure you think that was all legal now wasnt it,,, didnt the hill woods run mills and put thousands on the poverty line, why does our major share holder live in geneva and not pay his taxs to the crown,, i think he list could go on
im not pro usmanov but im not pro the current board either,, id like to make up my own mind thanks and not the bull put forward by the board now when they are running scares,,

Try and buy Arsenal Football Club! Thats a nice quiet under the radar way to do it!

I mean who would notice a 40 stone Eastern European trying to buy one of the elite English clubs!?

Sssshhhh before the press and the fans hear anything about this!

Jesus Rebel steady on a bit, I have an off-shore acc. as well does that put me and an international diamond trader in the same bracket as the likes of Usmanov and Abramovich who effectively murdered their way to wealth and power in post Soviet Russia, and in doing so stole from some of the most needy people on earth!
