Why don't we play rough?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

(a) wenger wants kids and not men playing for him so we dont have the physical assets needed to "assert ourselves" &

You've obviously never played football augie! It ain't about the height - it's about the build. Our problem is that our young players are very light framed and more mobile than most stocky well built players. It's no coincidence that Theo, Rosicky, Nasri etc pick up injuries - they are light with little muscle to their frame.

As a 5'8" midget I've only ever been injured when it's been by a sly c*nt doing a late one - never in a 50/50 - because I've got a well built frame. I've ploughed fuckers at 6'4" in matches and if they are skinny they hit the floor piss easy. Similarly I've been bounced off the ball by a bloke that was 5'2" at most but he was built like a brick shit house with a low centre of gravity.

Look at Theo or Rosicky's thighs next time they play. Compare that to the thighs of the likes of other short players from years ago like Dixon or Winterburn or Wrighty or Maradonna (and those players played at a time when REAL tackles went flying in). The modern light players don't have the muscle mass those players had.

whatever you want to get up to in your own time, digger...

Isn't it the case that in the 80s and 90s, it was generally thought that building up the thigh muscles was the way forward until the excess weight caused players to have retire with all manner of knee injuries as a result?

Also, aren't the likes of Rosicky, Nasri, Walcott prone to injury because they're fast and therefore likely to be hacked down and take the full force of the blow when they do?

Yep, their pace works against them, but the real problem is their light build. There were plenty of fast players in the old days but they carried a bigger build and could absorb knocks better. Accepted they weren't quite as fast as Theo. I suppose the ideal is a happy balance between build and speed but that is dificult to achieve.

The thing with the thigh muscles causing knee problems in the 80's was blown out of proportion a bit. Excessive muscle (Stewart Pearce is a good example) can cause knee problems but only if you run at pace regularly (Pearce never did!). Also many of the knee related problems from that era were partly due to the hard poor quality pitches, bad (overly heavy) training routines and poor boot and shin pad design.

Again it comes down to a happy medium; a well developed thigh muscle is vital but not overly developed.

It's also no coincidence that hamstring problems ard calf strains are morre common and keep players out longer nowdays with their lighter build.

I wouldn't say that was the case.

Nasri's broken fibula was due to getting kicked (a freak accident). His injury record since joining Arsenal was okay up until that point. Also, while at OM he managed 160 games in four seasons despite being hospitalised once with a meningitis-type illness.

Rosicky's problems have been traced back to a muscular imbalance.

Walcott though? I get the feleing that the poor guy is made of glass.
