The Wonder of You

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

it's slowly starting to grow on me.

Once we've won something it will be embraced more and more I'm sure.

Yeah same. I think no matter what song was picked it was always going to be met with substantial opposition.

I disagree with the idea that a pre-match song (the concept of 'anthem' will only inbed given time, i think) needs to be intimidating to opposition. What it needs to show is unity among the fans, its an emotional song and football can be incredibly emotional.

If everybody in the ground gave it a sing people will realise that its not that bad afterall.

Exactly.

The truth is if its not Stand up if you hate Tottnumb our fans wont sing fuck all. If the mickeys can sing YNWA and Stoke Delilah why cant we sing TWOY? The lyrics too hard for you?

And as mrgnu says you cant beat the King :teeth:

The Wonder of Poo is fucking 24 carat shit.

If the majority of supporters don't like it (and they don't) then it should be dropped.

No, the lyrics aren't too hard, but what on earth are we singing TWOY for?? - where's the logic or history behind it?

You mention the scousers and Stoke as examples, but in both cases it was the terraces that decided the anthem and not the club!

----

Read these...

Liverpool - YNWA...

In the 1960s, the deejay at Anfield would play the top-ten commercial records in ascending order, with the number one single transmitted last, shortly before kickoff. Supporters standing on the Spion Kop terrace would sing along, but once "You'll Never Walk Alone" dropped out of the top-ten, says Marsden, they continued to sing it. The club adopted it, and the rest is history...

Stoke - Delilah...

A tongue in cheek terrace song that was sung when Stoke City were in a dreadful run of form. It was later sung by Stoke fans in an ironic way when they were performing well, and eventually the song was adopted by the club as their anthem.

West Ham - Bubbles...

"I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" was introduced to the club by former manager Charlie Paynter in the late twenties. A player, Billy J. "Bubbles" Murray who played for the local Park School had an almost uncanny resemblance to the boy in the famous "Bubbles" painting by Millais used in a Pears soap commercial of the time. Headmaster Cornelius Beal began singing the tune "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" with amended lyrics when Park players played well.

Beal was a friend of Paynter, while Murray was a West Ham trialist and played football at schoolboy level with a number of West Ham players such as Jim Barrett. Through this contrivance of association the club's fans took it upon themselves to begin singing the popular music hall tune before home games, sometimes reinforced by the presence of a house band requested to play the refrain by Charlie Paynter

---

What will Arsenal's read??? - despite zero connection with Elvis, and without it having ever been sung on the terraces nor ANY link to the club whatsoever, Arsenal's marketing department decided to try and force a club anthem on the supporters. :?

Anthems are something special, that few clubs have, that I'm not sure should be artificially inseminated upon us like this.

And, in my opinion, if over the course of history the fans/terraces fail to adopt an anthm for themselves (although, Good Old Arsenal is ours!) then the club should just leave it alone and play an uplifting piece of music in it's place when the team come out.

That's my view, anyway.

My (silent) protest against TWOY is to not go into the stand until it's finished. Petty, but I cringe when we come out to that.
I don't go in either until the dirge is finished. It'll never be our anthem no matter how long they play it for. The song has fuck all connection with the club or its fans and the sooner it dissapears the better.

if - IF they are gonna use it they need to get the dourshytenegative lyrics changed...

also we could adopt the AC/DC track Big Jack for Jack Wilshere with a change to 'It's Jack'....he has the makings of being a legend...so why not get it up and running etc :D

It's SHIT

It's not even original as Port Vale have been using it as their anthem way before us. This makes it even shitter

People holding up their scarves and swaying from side to side is so false it makes me cringe

It's SHIT
