Please sign the Sunderland petition

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Please sign the Sunderland petition

Post by safcftm »

Hi lads,

Just a quick one- a while ago some of our fans were involved in an incident at newcastle central station when returning from a pre season friendly at hearts. Basically, we were told a special train would take fans directly back to sunderland. People got on and the train terminated at newcastle

At this point the fans faced brutality from the police, who hospitalised a few supporters. They claimed that our fans were "intent on trouble" and had planned a fight with newcastle fans at central. Obviously this is bollocks, since everyone thought the train was gonig to sunderland without stopping at central!

The police claimed 4 of their dogs were injured, saying the forces dogs had never been subjected to that level of violence before. A freedom of information request, however, showed that none of the dogs needed to see a vet

There are cases on going, the Sunderland fans expect the charges to be dropped and will then be seeking their own legal advice.

The fans have been fully supported by the Football Supporters Federation and they were made aware that, although no charges have been brought against any sunderland supporter at this stage (other that one who was arrested for being "drunk and disorderly" at the time, the only one arrested that day), other fans who were arrested well after the event, and released on unconditional bail, Sunderland AFC has decided to ban all supporters arrested during the incident until such time as they are found innocent.

They have suspended season tickets of people not even charged with an offence, never mind found guilty of one, and club policy dictates there will be no refunding of money for missed matches even if no charges are ever pressed. We feel this is unacceptable and the FSF have set up an online petition where you can sign to show your support, and where you can read more information about the incident and events that followed

This time it is the SAFC fans, but no clubs fans are safe from the police using heavy handed tactics (including striking someone on the head with a baton), and the policy of banning even when people havent been charged is, apparently, widely implemented by premier league clubs.

It would be great if a few of the Gooners on here could register their support to try and ensure that the fans get justice. Thanks for reading lads, much appreciated

Many thanks to everyone signing up to the petition. As you can see by the list of signatures we have got a great response already, despite the petition only going on line just an hour or so ago, and its amazing to see so many fans of so many different clubs showing their support.

Football fans of all clubs have been treated like second class citizens for far too long, often assumed to be guilty of some crime or other simply for turning up to support their team

If our fans can get this policy overturned then, hopefully, other clubs fans will be able to get similar policies at their clubs overturned as well, and maybe it will be a small step towards football fans being treated properly at matches

Thanks again to all, genuinely appreciated

We've all been there at one stage or another, mate. I just wish the plod (and the clubs) would realise not all fans are mindless hooligans.

things like this are only going to get worse, as the police have gotten away with the menezes incident it's only a matter of time before they start thinking they can get away with anything. the government has to take control of the situation, make a few coppers do time (and there are plenty of candidates for this) and the rest will start behaving properly again.
