As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

arseblog sums it all up perfectly:
The other main talking point involved Arsene Wenger not shaking hands with Mark Hughes at the end of the game. Wenger said afterwards:
I am free to shake whose hand I want. I had no professional courtesy to shake his hand.
If people want to label Wenger a sore loser then fine. Frankly I thought Hughes behaviour on the touchline was appalling all night.
Like a big blustering bully he prowled around, baiting Wenger, swearing at him, and basically behaving like an oaf of the highest order - then he complains at the end when a handshake is refused him?
What a c**t. Honestly, if you behave like a c**t then people will treat you like a c**t and Hughes got exactly the kind of respect he deserved - none.
People talk about it being etiquette and all that but if you show someone discourtesy for 90+ minutes and behave like an oik why on earth should they feel obliged to shake your hand just because it's custom to do so? I'm with Wenger on this one, Hughes was a prick. The easy option would have been for Arsene to shake his hand, with cameras looking on and pundits and columnists ready to have a go it's a more difficult decision not to. For me the bottom line if you behave with even a modicum of respect and manners then you will get a handshake at the end of the game - from Arsene Wenger or any other manager. If you don't then you're nothing more than a hypocrite if you complain afterwards. Like Hughes did.
Anyway, there's too much bollocks in football about shaking hands, as if it's the be all and end all of sportsmanship. You shake hands in the tunnel, you shake hands in the line-up with the shitty music before the game, shake hands after the game. Fuck that. There's no need for it all, FIFA/UEFA forcing this veneer of 'We're all super friends!!' to make the game more advertiser friendly. A load of spectic horse minge is what is. I want less handshaking, more kicking people right up in the air. That's what football is really about, not touchy-feely shite like anthems and pre-game embraces.
You leave DB10 out of this
What the fuck is "spectic"?
Is that like "septic" but worse??!! Oh my... it's me alrighty.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ radford say so what if he did'nt shake hughes hand. what's the big deal. these type of things bore radford.
yes i have but thats because sadly i am partly a cowardly conforming hypocrite.
its like wearing ties. i hate the bloody things but i do from time to time.
i think wenger did not let anybody down and hughes was shown up to be the two faced hypocrite he is claiming its important to be dignified in victory as well as defeat while in the same breath gloating about how he thought his team were so brilliant.
PERCY .
difference is those boxers may respect each other`s bravery etc whereas for various sound reasons wenger has no respect for hughes at all and what better way to show that than ignoring his very existence.

I dont think Hughes over did the gloating really. I think he is a *word censored* of the highest order but he got to AW last night and I would have liked him to keep his feelings to himself and not let that fucking idiot think he got one over him.

We are seeing the signs of a desparate man who is beginning to realise the game is up!
I believe now more than ever that we will be shot of him by xmas or early january, what a wonderful xmas pressie thet would be and a great way to start the new year.
Your having a laugh? Who do you want as manager then?
Hughes abused him all game, ive heard a rumour that Hughes laughed when the city fans sung THE song that the United fans sung last time we were up there - so, if that was true, should Wenger shake his hand? Would you shake the hand of someone like that? Its not sportmanship, its personal abuse.
I think walking away its more of a manly thing to do than shake hands with an idiot like that., Wenger is honest as the day is long and not a hypocrite - a great man regardless of what you think of him as manager.
As regards to comments "he doesnt care about the fans" What bollocks, he has given us fans memorys no other manager has, yes we all want more, but comments like that are comments of a very fickle supporter.

Maybe that is the reason Roly but then surely Wenger would have showed the same restraint when Hughes made the earth shattering decision to recover the ball from Arsenal's technical area?
Although it is not the worst thing in the world to do it was childish and daft. At a time when the club is struggling and the media jump on any small negativity it was a daft thing to do.
The Wenger of old would never have stooped so low but the Wenger of now is prone to daft acts as much as he is to daft comments.

Yes and wasn't it also a rumour that Wenger is a peadophile that spawned that song in the first place?
Agree with Spuddy, arseblog, even Roly () on the point of the whole handshake thing becoming a bit of an empty gesture & token wankism at times. In that sense I wouldn’t disagree Wenger is well within his rights to say fuck that when a c*nt like Hughes carries on the way he usually does, & the reactionary “journalismâ€
If AW had a reason for not shaking his hand I think he needs to come out and explain it, my first instinct was that he had just acted like a big spoiled kid however after reading some of these comments I am now not sure!!
Probably would have been better to have stood up to him face to face and explained why he wasnt shaking his hand as oppossed to scurrying away like a little boy????

That's how wonderful unsubstantiated rumours are![/quote
City fan is a client and he was at the league game, cant prove or otherwise obviously, Im not saying its true, im just saying thats what I heard - if its true or not, something must have riled Wenger. Hughes has always been an idiot, even in his Blackburn days, tried it with Ferguson earlier in the season and now with us.
