1966 World Cup Team

Post by GadgetMan »

just had to share this...I went to a show tonight with 8 of the remaining members of the team...all the surviving members minus Bobby Charlton...hosted by Jimmy Greaves...

the team are now legends and it was an honour just to be in the same room with them...oh how we could do with more of the same in SA next year...

Baldy wasnt there probably cos he's too busy for this kind of thing...for the rest of the guys it was definitely a way for them to boost their retirement funds...for some of them, I definitely think they could do with an extra bob or two...

they're a funny bunch of guys though...Jack Charlton is definitely starting to lose his marbles...he'd start one story and then end up finishing another...but you could definitely feel a warmth and effection for all those guys...the camaraderie between them was amazing...guys from another era...

the most telling point was when someone asked them how important for England was winning the WC...Nobby Stiles said you had to put it into context...it was important because it was barely 20 years since the end of WW2...and most of there fathers and uncles had fought the Germans...thats how important it was...

in all, you just felt you were sharing the same roomspace with 8 guys who (as a team) were now an important part of this nations history...as individuals they were quite ordinary...no different to you or me...there was a humbleness there...but they happened to be in the right place at the right time...and as a group of footballers had achieved something special...

and you also come away with the feeling that the events of one single afternoon had changed and transformed their entire lives...that there lives had become defined by lifting that trophy...

like I said it was a pleasure and an honour...

Unlike the shower of shallow, greedy, mercenary crunts that wear the 3 lions nowdays...

Nice write-up by the way. Apologies fellow mods - I'm moving this back up to the chat area. Too good to be down here in the basement. 8)

Shame it wasn't the whole squad you could have met George Eastham.

thanks for moving this back up to the main forum - its appreciated...yes youre right...you really couldnt help but sit there watching these 8 guys and compare them to the current England team members...Jimmy Greaves who was compering the evening made the telling point that Fat Lampard earns more in one week than Ray Wilson made in his entire career...and Ray Wilson was named in the team of the 1966 WC Finals for his performances...says it all doesnt it?

and they genuinely seemed to enjoy being there...Martin Peters said they love doing that kind of event...it gave the team the chance to get together and they simply loved just talking to people about winning the WC...and it wasnt gloating, egotistical or big-headedness...they just enjoyed re-living the day...and they seemed surprisd that people were still interested in them...can you believe that!

the other thing was that Gordon Banks wasnt there...he didnt make it and the other members of the squad were all just a bit worried...he had been in Florida and was due to have flown back 2 days before but hadnt turned up and no-one had heard from him...it was a real shame because i really wanted to see him...as a replacement they drafted in Peter 'The Cat' Bonetti for the evening...a very entertaining guy...

a couple of other things...yes, nobby stiles is really blind as a bat...could barely see the microphone...coke bottle glasses...Jimmy Greaves might not have been in the Final team BUT Geoff Hurst said he was the one player all the other players looked up to as 'a genius'...Jack Charlton said Alf Ramsay only spoke to him about 10 times during his entire England career...

what was really disappointing was that the auditorium was only about 50-60% full...most of the people there were men of a certain age...with their grandsons!...like someone said earlier, all the team should have been knighted...if beckham gets a knighthood before them, it'll be a scandal...

I am an Arsenal season ticket holder and I know this topic isnt Arsenal related but it was a wonderful evening and one i wont forget...just wanted to share it with you...
