As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
usual thread starter… it’s a shame it has to end this way. It’s not in Jens’ character to take this kind of thing in a dignified way. He got it badly wrong at the start of the season, but he’s always been error prone. I think everyone knows he’ll depart in the New Year, but it’s a tortuous wait for all concerned. Almunia has done well and deserved an extended run. Let’s just hope he doesn’t re-create the Manchester United nightmare of early 2005 on Saturday eh?
Although I will be glad to see the back of Lehmann because of his attitude he on his day could be a great keeper.Remember his penalty save against Villareal and an unbelievable save from Raul in an earlier round against Real Madrid.Having said that I prefer Almunia any day at least you know he isn`t going to assault someone because they had the cheek to go within a yard of him.
I read this article with interest. I wish I hadn't bothered. What absolute bollocks. Whatever Lehmann's failings with his attitude, his ability should not be called in to question. Lehmann has been an ouststanding, world-class goalkeeper, to question his technique because you're a 16 year old goalkeeper is absolute nonsense.
Jens has blotted his copybook over the past couple of weeks and should never play for Arsenal FC again, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a great keeper for us. I will remember with great fondness his one man show in the FA Cup Final against Man Utd, his penalty save in Villareal and his outstanding contribution to the invincibles - you don't go 47 games unbeaten (he wasn't here for the first two) if you have a joker in goal.
Sorry - but this article is nonsense.. or so are at least most parts of it.
Yes, he definitely IS unhappy about sitting on the bench.. tell me one goalkeeper with his past/of his calibre who wouldn't.
He might be a bit rude in the way he expresses his disappointment but he always has been like that (some may have heard about his "war" with oliver kahn [no excuse I know, BUT]), everyone knows this and Wenger certainly knew it when he brought him and it has absolutely nothing to do with his skills on the pitch.. which he recently showed in the Ireland - Germany EURO qualifier.
(By the way: "...the so-called German number one (only because there’s no-one else)." is the biggest crap i've heard in years.. Germany hasn't got any keepers? Get new sources!)
No doubt that there are better Goalies than Jens but Almunia? Stop kidding me!
He might have a good run at the moment but he's no world-class keeper.. I'm happy to see him play this good recently but I really doubt that he will be able to maintain this good form for too long.
I really hope that Fabianski can step-up pretty soon to be honest .. and that Lehmann will play until then or that we'll get another man (Green?) until he is ready to do so.
And - if another Goalkeeper comes - I hope that Lehmann goes to another team (which he will do anyways if he doesn't play at Arsenal) to play on a regular basis .. he deserves better than sitting on the bench.
Very good article, by a 16 year old who has done better then hold the CL's record for not conceding a goal, single-handedly won an FA Cup final, performed campaign saving heroics at Anfield in our last season at Highbury, ousted a keeper of Khan's quality to play for his country then performed brilliantly in the world cup run, played a part in an unbeaten season , man what a keeper that 16 year old must be.
There I was thinking Ole Gunner was amazed at his shot being turned around the post but clearly he was mouthing "What a poor dive technique"
Why is it when Gooners talk about Lehmanns heroics, they completely ignore the fact that he cost us the Champions League? Yes he had some great games and we should be greatful for that, but isn't it odd that his best season and a half happened in the lead up to the World Cup?
He was on his best behaviour because he wanted to play for Germany at home, so he stopped his pathetic nonsense and acted like a professional. Unfortunately since then he has gone back to the old Lehmann.
The fact is he's a world class shot stopper, but he has quite possibly the worst judgment I have ever seen in a keeper. Almunia may not have his talent, and he may not single handedly win us a game, but at least he won't single handedly lose us a game either.
Lehmann for me has been a great servent to Arsenal. But to be honest he is an pure an utter c**t. Taking nothing away from the fact that he has been good for a few years the man thinks he is the sh@t. He rates himself way too highly and has the temper of some kind of murderer. Looking past the fact that he has tryed to choke every striker he could get his German shovel hands on my example comes from this season. At the start he as expected got his place as number one. But he then funked up and Manual Almunia got into the team. Then when he was ready to come back after a set back he expects to jump back between the sticks after making an arse out of himself for the first two games of the season and almost dropping the team four points in total. Then when he did not get back as easily as he would have liked due to the form of our current number 1 he starts on him and believe it or not the boss. He firstly clamied that Almunia is half the keeper he is and that Manual has never played in a big match. Then he said the boss was humiliating him on purpose and that if he knows what is good for him then he will be put back in the team. He is a fool. The sooner we see his back walking out off the club the better for everyone. In general he was a good server but he has lost it in his head and on the pitch so his time is up.
Yet without Jens, we wouldn't have got 4th place that year or got to that final. He also won us an Fa Cup final, took part in the unbeaten season but his antics do tend to overshadow his considerable talent.
