Would a change in formation make us more defensively stable?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Wenger said this, on Arsenal.com, at the start of the season....

‘We will concede fewer goals this season’

“...we conceded too many goals last year and we decided to rectify our defence and the system we play.

“I believe that by the end of this season we will have conceded less goals..."

Well, I guess Wenger fucked that up then  Last season we conceded a ridiculous 37 league goals BUT this season, after only 25 games, we've conceded a farcical 30 fucking goals!!!!! and counting....

Arsene Knows :banghead:
I believe that the team were pressing and closing down the opposition more when they were in possession, earlier on in the season, than they are now, it appears to me to be a workrate thing, whereby our players are no longer putting it in. Whether it's due to personnel, belief in the system now or just plain workrate is open to debate.

I also agree to where IHH is coming from but I would prefer to go back to a basic 4-4-2 and that's a system where we've traditionally had more success.

Havent I argued for a 3-5-2 formation for 2 years now ? Havent I also said that our system is not 4-3-3 but more akin to a 4-5-1 system until we go gung ho ? Wenger hasnt a clue about tactics :banghead:

The formation seems to be a viable (though short term) solution to our problems Hlebby. The only problem I have with it is that Sol is not physically at the level to play in the league week in week out.

Maybe this could be an option in Europe where the speed is less frantic.

Completely agree with that. My only worry about reverting back to (the successful) 4-4-2 is that Song doesn't have the pace to play that role. He is our most improved player this season but I don't feel he will be able to play that role unless Cesc drops back and helps him out.

Id agree id would be an idea to go back to 442 nad have to say good call by vforvictory with szczesny in goal, from what ive seen of him at brentford he's been brilliant.

I would stop the marauding full back runs - I can't remember the last time anything good came from them, and neither Sagna or Clichy can cross.

Song is having a post-CAN wobble and needs to get back to do doing the simple things simply.

I think the midfield of Diaby, Song and Cesc has the potential to be great, I wouldn't necessarily change the formation.

I would also be tempted to swap Gallas in for Clichy as someone mentioned above.

I think the 4-3-3 formation was the right idea, for all the talks of 4-5-1, we have scored more then enough goals this season. The problem has been indiscipline in midfield and at the back, too many bodies going forward at once, leaving us open for a counter. Song, Diaby, Denilson, Clichy, Sagna, Gallas, Vermalen, Eboue, Traore, all been guilty of it

If we can get Bendtner fully fit, 3-5-2 would be worth a try, at least till our players learn how to count.
