I dont think Arshavin is the type of player who will give you match winning performances in every game, even if he plays for Barcelona, so to speak. But he can create moments of magic, which are vital in big games. He can be a big game player, which we dont have now, maybe apart from Cesc.
I do sympathize with him, given the position he is being played in and the lack of quality around him, but still I expect more from a world class senior player like him than he has been providing. Id want him to try and dictate the game more, even if that means he has to drop down a bit. Sometimes he tries to be too cute and clever for my liking with his passes.
No quality around him? How about that looping pass from fabregas against the chavs that gave us our best chance of the match?
I know this "he can produce a moment of magic" line has become embedded in many peoples image of the guy but its time to judge him on what he is doing on the pitch. He has produced 5 moments of magic since he got here, and all were at anfield, a place he confesses to love for some unknown reason.
I mean come on, I'm sure denilson could provide a moment of "magic" if he was given long enough..
Think I had said Cesc is the only other big game player in the team and that ball he played to Arshavin was fantastic, cant really fault him for the finish though.
The Liverpool game you are talking about, he almost won us that game single handedly. He almost won us the United away game this season single handedly and he didnt even play that well that day.
As far as your comment about Arshavin not being snapped up by a top club untill he is 28 is concerned, some players just develop a bit late. Also the Russian league is not the most watched league and not a place top clubs normally go to looking for talent as much as lets say the french league or portugal. Arshavin himself probably didnt know how good he was untill after the Euros.
Im not saying he shouldnt be criticised, he should be able to mould his game accordingly to have more of an inpact, even he is playing out of positions with shit players around him. But it will be unfair to doubt his quality and a crime to compare him to brainless players like Denilson and Theo.

Theo is also being played out of position. But you put your head down, try your hardest and if you're not good enough or not trying hard enough you get criticised. Im not defending Theo or Denilson just accusing some people of double standards over Arshavin.
He has escaped criticism this season due to a strong amount of goodwill which, for me atleast, is beginning to be sorely tested. out of position or not, a lazy player is a hinderance to any serious proffessional football team.
Another example, Robinho is clearly a talented player but lacked this basic requirement for prem league players. Time for Arshavin to shape up or move on.

Surely you can see the difference between Arshavin shooting from a wide angle when he had two unmarked players to pass too inside the box and Nasri's indecision when clear on goal and with a team mate to the right? Would say Nasri should have passed it but would have simply been nice if Nasri had actually done more then dither on it
For all our supposed lack of quality, it is amazing how many goals we scored. If we are that rubbish, then we would have to conclude Arshavin scored or set up most of them. He hasn't so maybe we can give the attacking players a tiny wheeny amount of credit for the 60 goals scored this season? Just a thought
Arshavin has had a poor season for any number of reasons. Russia being knocked out took a big toll on him, he and Gallas need a rest soon so they can recover from their injuries, second season syndrome, having to adjust to a new position and then being forced up front when we had nobody else.
Once fully fit and flitting about the attacking area's in a freerole from the flanks, hopefully we will see him influence things more then he has done.

Some of you guys complain about the lack of quality in players like denilson, diaby etc and rightfully so but here you have a world class player and you still slate him A few more denilson's and ye wouldnt be long changing your minds
Yeah he's such a world beater that he wasn't snapped from the Russian leagues until he was 28?He has natural talent no doubt but people talk of theo living off one hatrick and a run at liverpoo. Well, Arshavin is living off his anfield antics and one good euros. I'm sorry, but i cant imagine many "quality" teams tolerating a player with 0 work. No such team exists.
That said, I still think hes our best option on the left when RvP is fully fit, but he needs to stop pretending he is heads above the rest of the squad. And if he is, he needs to prove it.
27 actually and at the time he was ranked 6th best player in Europe and 11th in the world, am not sure many in our current squad will pull that off from the russian league.

Ok, but there have also been many, many players who HAVE been snapped up who aren't even 1/10th as good as Arshavin, so I'm not sure it's completely down to his quality (or lack of) that kept him in Russia.
After all, Drogba was playing in the French leagues until he was 26(?), and Larsson was in Scotland until into his 30's, so sometimes players either develop late or choose to stay where they're happy.

And thats the problem. He is living off the deserved adoration and respect he got following his euros run and seems to think he is on some level above the rest of the team without feeling the need to prove it.
Besides, what the hell has anyone ever learned from football "rankings", about as much as statistics I'd wager.

I accept your point but you're focusing too much one part of my post. That part was a preclude to my other argument which is his chronic lack of effort, or inability to adapt to english football (call it what you like) is holding himself and the team back because we are all waiting for that "moment of magic" - an Alan shearerism if ever there was one

And you base your agrument on pure assumption, if that were the case then why bother scoring 6 and assisting 6 in 12 games when he first came. He could easily have done piss-all and let us finish below Villa.
Maybe its because he wasn't playing as a main striker then and did his job, he was fresh and dint play every game because everyone else was injured or incapable of playing upfront.
Did it ever occur to you that he tried to score first against Utd because he knew that we would most-likely blow the game if he dint
We lost because once we went ahead, the team was still playing an attacking brand of game rather than sitting back – because you don’t just want to retain the lead but maybe add more.
In the second half, Manchester pressed little but did enough to score two goals on us. After that, we got desperate but we had really given enough and so all the three points were thrown away
arshavin is still our second top scorer this season behind cesc. he is a quality player, he isn't getting the service he needs, plus being played out of postion....

Aren't all of our arguments based on assumption? When people were (deservedly) slagging off theo for being more concerned with his celebrity lifestyle I dont remember you coming along denouncing it all as assumption even though it was.
