Lehmann and Gilberto – a study in contrast (12/11)

Lehmann and Gilberto – a study in contrast (12/11)

Usual thread starter… Jens has a screw loose. We all know that. However, maybe he is trying to make his position at the club so untenable that he will force Arsene to sell him in January, rather than risk the run up to the 2008 Euros on the bench. He knows his time is up, he’s going in the summer anyway. He just wants to bring it forward so he will sour the atmosphere. Le Boss would probably prefer to keep him for the duration of the season, but having him around can’t be good for team spirit so he will probably relent and let him go if he can get £500,000 for him from someone. Do you think Jens is being a bit cuter than we give him credit for? Or would he have been better waiting for Almunia to make his errors and keep schtum?

jens knows what he's doing allright.. euro 08 is his swan song in the national team,, but wenger well up for him by sticking him on the bench,, see him in prague,, not a flicker of emotion,,
always find the keeper is the one area wenger falls down as a great keeper is worth a lot of points over a season to a team and could be the difference between winning something and not,, from what i read and hear and can see myself almunia is not the answer either and fabianski is prob there for next season as num one,, maybe its time to bring that forward but cant see wenger doing that because then he would be admiting his mistake and thats not going to happen

Lehmann and Gilberto

When the January transfer window opens Jens should be thrown through it.No doubt a great goal-keeper but his attitude stinks.
With reference to Gilberto, however,Arsene should go down on his knees and beg him to stay because he is the model professional as well as one of the best holding midfielders in the world (you don`t get to be a regular in Brazil`s team as well as their captain if your only average). It would be unfair to drop Flamini at present but Gilberto`s chance will come during the season of that there is no doubt.

I think the Ed has called this one exactly right.

There are very few managers who would be more likely to pick a player who had just insulted them and Wenger ceretainly isn't one of them. Jens knows this. Despite everything we say about him being mad, he's not a fool.

For Jens the very worst outcome would be for him to be a squad player, only getting the odd game when someone else is injured. That would cost him his place at Euro 08. So he needs to make sure the club are determined to sell him at the earliest opportunity. He's trying to ensure that outcome and i think his remarks have to be seen in that context.

I agree. I've thought Jens' Arsenal career was finished (barring injuries to our other keepers) ever since Arsene dropped him for the two disastrous mistakes and Almunia immediately started to look a team player. Watch him in the post-match hugs and applauding the fans. Manuel still needs to control the urge for those kamakazi dashes...but at least he's not mad and doesn't collect yellow cards for a hobby.
