If Portsmouth cease to exist...

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

If Portsmouth cease to exist...

Post by Bring Back Pires »

Then I want either Arsenal or the Premier League to refund the cost of my match ticket from the league game at the Emirates last August.

Seriously, why should 60,000 people be expected to shell out £35+ for a PL game that has no relevance or existance?

To rob teams who've beaten them of the three points is one thing, but to take cash from thousands of fans - not just ours - who've spent time and money on something that is being nullified, is simply unfair.

So the PL either need to pull their finger out and make sure they finish the season, or be ready to dip into their pockets for the sum that fans around the country will be owed.

Rest assured - there is no way the Premier League will let Pompey go under during the season as it will do massive damage to their beloved "brand" around the world.

The PL will meet Pompey's obligations but then cut them loose in Summer, once Pompey have gone down and they are no longer part of the PL. At that point, the vultures will swarm all over them and Pompey will be playing in Div 3 by 2012.

If the PL are going to throw out Portsmouth, they need to do it sooner rather than later. There's only 11 games left per club as it is, and it wouldn't be right to start changing the entire landscape of the league this close to the season's end.

But, knowing the PL, they'll probably make the change the night before the last day of the season, fucking up everything in the process.

Imagine lifting the title at the Emirates, and then having to give it back because Portsmouth folded at the last minute.

Actually, the first part of that last sentence was ludicrous enough.

If they went under before the end of the season, would the team in 17th be relegated?

Surely Portsmouth would finish 20th by default, so only the 19th and 18th placed clubs would be relegated

In a way guys this could prove to be a good thing!

How?

Well surely now the Premier League will have to be more stringent regarding ownership and debt.

I'm not really worried about Usmanov putting us in debt as he has the cash but I have grave concerns about Kroenke. Just because he brought an Arsenal fan group to the States, does that mean we shouldnt ask questions?

The thing that does worry me is if he says NOTHING now, what would he be like if he took over and things went WRONG?!!

I doubt the Premier league will let them go broke this season, it is not in the leagues interests, they may have made a deal with Portsmouth to keep them from going into receivership by agreeing to pay the remaining TV money for this year and parachute payments in advance to keep them going.

Next season though will be tough even if they stay up somehow.
