Alex Manninger

Alex Manninger

Alex has come on as sub goalkeeper for Austria. I still remember the saves against United at Old Trafford in the Overmars match and the saves against West Ham at upton park. I forget the Chelsea cup 5 goals though!

The story doing the rounds was that wenger dropped him to bring back seaman because the defenders wanted seaman back in - being english team-mates and all that  That was the 1st huge mistake wenger made in my opinion

When seaman got injured in 1998 manninger came in and did a first class job at the time he wanted first team football and cant blame him leaving for that.

Letting Alex go was a big big mistake I think!

I loved him and was great hearing him booming out his instructions with his voice!

A proper Gooner in my eyes!

Alex did very well and has become a bit of a legend for his 97/98 season but Seaman, depite maybe caring on 1 or 2 years too long, was a class above.

My worst memory of Manninger is his unexplainable mistake against Boro when he tried to rush out and get a ball despite having like 15 yards longer to run than Merson and ended up looking like Almunia at his worst

Or his performance against the Foxes, it was sad to see such a talented keeper's confidence crash as it did in his last years with us. Played well for Austria which I was glad to see, I hope he gets to be first choice for Euro 2008
