Justin Hoyte has spoken about the hurt he felt at being racially abused by both fans and players from Serbia in the recent Under-21 European Championships in Holland.
No punishment was handed out to those involved, and Serbia remained in the competition, eventually being beaten by the hosts in the Final.
In his time on loan at Sunderland Hoyte became involved in the anti-racism initiative 'Show Racism the Red Card' and attended their first-ever event at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
"Originally I thought it was one of their chants," said the 22-year-old, reflecting on the abuse in Serbia.
"But then when we realised that it actually wasn't we stopped [playing]. We spoke to the referee, the linesman and to our coaches to tell them that they [the crowd] were being racist.
"It was tough because the officials did nothing so we had to get on with it.
"Then at the end of the game a few of the players were running up the tunnel and calling us names and spitting at us. It was really hard to take and I hope that it never happens again."
Manchester City youngster Nedum Onuoha bore the brunt of the crowd's abuse, and Hoyte knew that his team-mate was struggling to accept it.
"We club together whenever you hear a player experiencing it, but it was so hard for us all," he said. "You could see in Nedum's body shape that he didn't want to carry on but we all put it behind us and became more determined to win the game, which we did.
"It's a shame that nothing happened to Serbia afterwards. I believe that if you really want to kick it [racism] out then teams have to be punished."
if tha was wngland we would be kicked ofof any competition for a number of years/tournements, no players or teams should experience racist abuse on the football pitch whilst doing there job.

It's an unfortunate fact that a lot of east european countries are still fairly racist. They are not cosmopolitan and have no real experience of other races or cultures. Put it down to ignorance as much as anything.
At the moment, Ireland has a large Polish and Latvian community, mostly young people here because of our (currently) strong economy, and most of them that I've met are so casually racist that it is quite shocking.

It would be hard to meet someone, anywhere who doesn't have some form of prejudice - whether conscious or otherwise. I note your points.

Aren't you sure that racism should be sorted out on the streets of Belgrade first before the Serbian FA should be held to account.
And don't forget - blacks call themselves 'niggers' so why can't Serbs - it's like we're all dancing to the minorities drum beat innit?

Yes they are racists, but none of you guys dont know serbians beter than I do, dude thay are not humans they are animals, i lived a war against thos beasts, what i seen in a war it's unaceptable from my human sense to recognise serbians ever as humans. (Un and osce hided a lot of facts abut serbian masacres in albanians, i beleive u guys seen a lot abut the war here, but i'm telling u guys not the way i seen it)
I was shocked how UEFA acepted Serbia in tournament.
Serbians think that they are something special beter than any other nation in this planet, but dont forget they are Slavik nation as are poland, slovakia rusia, etc. And they are all nacists and racists.
As about Hoyte and Onouha i'v seen the game and it was really hard for them, and the serbs should be punished.
The serbians just threated two deays ago Kosovo (the place where i live) if we declare indpendance they will attack us with nuclear weapon, also the Nato troops here in Kosovo.
They will need decades to ber level with other non slavic nations of the area and we dont have to mention Europians or England, who are the masters of civilization.

Well this is an enormous generalization.
Latvia is right up in the Baltic, not far from Scandanavia. Serbia on the other hand is across the water from Italy. You might as well make a generalization about the English from experience of the Spanish in terms of geographical distance.
As for being casually racist, I don't see London's Polish or Latvians as being particularly racist. In fact I had a recent experience in South London where a black man wouldn't make way on the back seat of the bus for a Pole when there was space to and then when an argument kicked off as a result the black man told him to fuck off back to his own country.

Assuming that you're a white Australian I think that you're speaking from the comfort of being within the ethnic group which forms the hegemonic viewpoint of a society.
