PRE GAME BARCA THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Exactly, I would say the 3 best teams in europe at the moment.

Well then, Mr Wenger, you told us this team was good enough to win major trophies. Some of the fans have said that we will be out the moment we play a decent team. Now's the time for us to judge whether we are good enough to beat the very best.

I've a bad feeling about this. I watched the draw just before I went to the doctors (no rude jokes please) and when I got there I was given the red disc with number 14 on it.......

Both us and Barca are not that bad, are we? :? Anyway, with Nick and Theo in our team, we must be favourites to win a crap shoot!!!

bollox...Lyon is better than ManUre...saying that, even Bayern Munich is better than ManUre...

The thing is, this is exactly what it takes to get to the top, not necesseraly in same order, but every team is expected to beat at least 2 class sides on their way to glory...this is a big test for Arsene Wenger and this Arsenal team, both in CL and League and for once I'm behind them wholehartedly Come on Gunners :barscarf:

The only thing that springs to mind on this particular date of March 31st is that not only will it be Arsenal vs. Barcelona...

But it will also be the NINTH anniversary of David Rocastle's death....

Lets do it for Rocky!!!!

On one level i think this is a great draw and i'm really looking forward to the tie, Barca are the best footballing side in the world and this is what the CL should be about, taking on the very best..

But on a more whats best for the club level, if we had any faint hopes of winning the CL this is the worst draw we could of got..
I can see where some are coming from in thinking that because Barca play football like us we will be allowed more space to play football ourselves...that would be all well and good if we were on a parity with them quality wise, which outside of funboy three world we most definitely are not..
It's all very well quoting games they lost as evidence they are not all that, i could fill the page with embarrassing results we have had.

The way to beat Barca is the same way teams here use to beat us, they bully us and they defend deep and in numbers and hit us from set pieces and on the break, it's all about hard work, organisation and being able to play to a plan, thats your best chance of beating a team like Barca.
The problem is we are not capable of those things, i'm sure we can give them some problems from set pieces but other than that we are ready made for them.
Instead of thinking about how much space we are going to have to play our game i think the opposite is what should be occurring to people, how much space they are going to have to play their game..they are dangerous enough against the very best and well organised teams with packed well drilled defences, wtf are they going to do to our defence, all over the place, centre halfs joining in the attack, poor defensive cover, players drifting back in a dream.

Although i think we would have struggled against both Inter and United i would have been more confident we at least had a chance due to our ability to outplay them with our football, especially if they took us likely, which i think they may have. But i have a bad feeling about Barca, not just about losing, there would be no shame in that, they are a great side, i have a feeling they may embarrass us.
Our game is about possession, passing and movement, as is theirs, they just do it better than we do, which is going to be a big problem for us, we are not used to that, even more critical though is they have far more cutting edge on the end of that possession, passing and movement and that more than anything is why i fear the kind of spanking we got from United last year..

manUSA was only 3-1
I wouldn't call a 2 goal margin over 90 a spanking

You obviously didn't watch the game then... men against boys..the game was over with over an hour left in the tie, i would say that was a bit of a spanking, wouldn't you..

Like most Gooners my first reaction was one of dread and fear but as time went by those feelings changed to a real eagerness and anticipation and maybe even a small amount of confidence  Mind you I have to say that confidence was well shook when I was reminded on this thread about average al's "performance" v them in paris :speechless:

Where I will disagree with most of ye is on who will be our biggest threat - there is no doubt that messi is simply world class but I firmly believe that to win this game we have to nullify xavi and ineista as our main priority and cut the supply line to messi. I also feel that people who believe that it will be an open football match have very short memories cos in last seasons final barca absolutely fcuked manure tactically by pressing up on their back 4 and making them hoof the ball long rather than play through midfield.

Havent actually been able to keep up to date with much news today as have been in transit to laandan with the family for tomorrows game but am I right in saying that this evening wenger said that gallas has only a 20% chance of being fit for barca while rvp is out until may ? If so then I know it is stating the obvious but we cannot afford to lose anymore players through injuries. Personally, and I know this could backfire royally, but I quite like the thought of sol marking ibrahimovic cos I think sol would kick 7 sorts of shite out of that lazy *word censored* 8)

At the end of the day we really have nothing to lose here - we werent expected to win this competition and we certainly wont be favourites to beat barca so we can relax and play our game and usually that is when we are at our best. I certainly am more confident facing these than if we drew the manc *word censored* and would prob accept losing to this team quicker than to the mancs as well. I suppose my only concern here is the potential disruption and distraction these games could be to the more important issue and that is our own league
