The 3 foreigners limit of the early 90s

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The 3 foreigners limit of the early 90s

Post by Cus Geezer »

If it were still here today what three would you pick and which English players would fill the side.

I'd say.....

GK - Robert Green: Must have pics of Macca in a compromising situation if Robbo and Carson are ahead of him.

DR - Justin Hoyte

DL - Ashley Cole: would have got his extra £5k a week with the limit as we would have no real option.

DC - Micah Richards: was thinking that we might have kept Sol for a bit longer, but go for youth seeing that he wants to join us.

DC - Kolo Toure: Can also play full back.

MR - David Bentley: would have kept hold of him probably.

MC - Steve Sidwell: Him too

MC - Cesc Fabregas: Couldn't seriously resist this one.

MR - Jermaine Pennant: With more of a chance might not have played the *word censored*, then again might have and turned in the odd good performance but not reach full ability because of his wild streak like Merse.

FC - Theo Walcott

FC - Robin Van Persie

Not as good is it?

This a actually a decent team, all of them have played or are playing for Arsenal right now and all expect Toure, Fabregas and Van Persie hold or will hold a British passport:

I'd play Almunia in goal because he is getting a British passport soon and therefore wouldn't be a foreigner

Toure at right-back

Cashley at left-back

Sol Campbell and Matthew Upson as centre-backs

Chav Pennant as right-winger

Edu could have played for England at Euro 2004 because he had a British passport but Brazil called him up so I am playing him at left-wing

Bentley and Fabregas as the centre-midfield duo

Walcott and Van Persie up front

Tactics: give the ball to Toure, Fabregas or Van Persie and let them to do their stuff

Not so sure about that one, mate. He barely got a Portuguese one.

Silvinho or Sylvinho was also a Brazilian who could have played for...

Brazil
England
Morocco
Latvia
Canada
Luxembourg
The Peoples National Republic of Congo
Button Moon
Lapland
Fiji
Darth Vadars Imperials

It just depended on what passport his agent could get him at the time!

Well you shall be sure now because wikipedia says so:
Edu then put forward plans to wish to play for England in the World Cup (as he had gained British citizenship) were Brazil not willing to accept his placement. This was cancelled by April as he was handed a match against Chile and subsequently named to play in the Copa América in 2004.

1. Khalid, you should now that Tony Saunders is the onlinegonner's chief wikipedia correspondent. (Sorry Tony, couldn't resist) His scepticism about Wikipedia is not misplaced though.

2. If this is true, how did Edu gain British Citizenship so quickly? Was there any reason other than residency to expalin why Edu would gain British citizenship?

3. If he became a british citizen, then why did he not wrap his car around a lampost after a bucketful of lager?
