England’s exit could hurt Arsenal (22/11)

usual thread starter… can’t say I was particularly upset by England’s exit. Sure I wanted them to get through, but they’ve let me down so many times years and years ago that I don’t allow myself to get too worked up about the national team. I’m still looking forward to Euro 2008, although a large part of the comedy element will be missing. Still, this country will probably be providing a referee, so there will still be laughs a plenty. Never mind Graham Poll, does any one remember Mike Riley in Portugal 2004? Encore!
More seriously, do you think Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool will benefit next season from the enforced rest their England players will get?

I don't agree with this:
Gael Clichy hasn't played for France yet and if England calls him up, will he say "yes"? I don't think so. Same goes for other EU players that play in the Premiership and haven't played for their national team. Fabregas and Van Persie didn't play for Spain and Holland respectively when they were bought by Arsenal; would they have played for England if they had a chance? No, they would wait for their real national team to call them up.
Why would other EU players play for England instead of the country they were born and bread. I find this quote very stupid and ridiculous. For example:It is high time that they stop contravening European law and immediately allow all players from any other EU nation to play for the English national team.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
I think playing in Austria/Switzerland in June will benefit our boys. While the English lads from our three main rivals will eat, drink laze about watching TV our lot will be playing with and against some of the best talent on the planet which can only improve them.Obviously there is the problem of injuries but other than that the Arsenal players will come back with new ideas and bursting with enthusiasm.

OK, didn't notice it. I thought he was serious.tonysaunders wrote:Relax, Khalid. The emailer in question was saying this in jest. It was not a serious suggestion.khalid_red wrote:I don't agree with this:

makes no difference to Liverpool
they have one England international
and if we'd qualified Theo might well have gone anway
weird gerrard comes out with quotas argument - Liverpool only have one first teamplayer who is eligible or will play for england
and all he does is dive scream abuse at the ref and pass to the opposition
chelski and manure are a bit different
their youth setups have saved them millions by providing them with
rooney, rio, hargreaves and carrick so cheaply
chelski have had the same success scouring youth football for
lampard, cole, cashley, parker, bridge, johnson
thank god for their brilliant youth setups coaching and scouting or we wouldn't have such a gr8 national team

As an England fan, gutted and I feel sorry for the manager who I thought played 4-3-3 but J.Cole seemed to drift too far back and with Gerrard hitting every blue shirt in sight that he could, it got more and more defensive. Now the England manager will have his career permanently tarnished and after the abuse managers seem to get, I'm not going to complain about the wages.
Please FA use this kick to reform the youth system and build that bleeding academy we so need! Still I hope Euro 2008 is a good cup with good attacking play

John Motson is the business for me now. After the Wigan game on which he did the BBC TV commentary a few of us were chatting to him about Arsenal and England. He said the whole thing about too many foreigners and the ffect on the England team was "a red herring" and after watching Arsenal v Wigan he could see exactly why 60,000 of us turned out for every home game. This is the football people want to watch, regardless of nationality. He was almost orgasmic on MOTD about the first half move which led to Ade's shot saved by Pollitt.
