I too have supported Arsenal for over 36 years now. My first season was when we lost in the League Cup Final to Swindon 1968/69. I was just 10 at the time. Going to school on the following Monday in an area of North London which was more white than red meant I had to put up with all the taunts from my school mates with nothing to be able to go back at them with as we hadn't won a thing for years then.
I could eaily have changed my allegiance and supported Spurs from then on. However, I persevered and thank god I did. Where are those Spurs fans now? They are only now beginning to resurface after 30 years of hiding because they've had a little bit of success this year in the Uefa cup. You watch them dissappear again once they get knocked out and have nothing left to play for like usual.
I am a true fan, it has nothing to do with how many matches you go to. Given the chance I would be there every game, but that just isn't possible. It doesn't mean that I don't feel the agony of every goal we concede and the pleasure of the goals we score.
Being a true fan comes from the way you feel inside not how many facts you can remember about he club. That just makes you an encyclopedia. Caring about the club, it's players, Manager and sharing the grief when we heard of the death of people like Geordie Armstrong and Rocky.
The key is to have belief in the future of the club. I will support Arsenal until I die, even if I never get to see another game. If the club went out of existence then I would never watch another football match again.
My request to all true Arsenal Fans is that you continue to support the club in what ever way you can. To those who can get to follow them around the country and in Europe. Sing up, support the players dont barrack them. To those like me desperately trying to find some form of media to listen/watch the greatest club in the World, be positive and don't allow other less fortunate supporters of lesser clubs get you down. We will rise again better than ever for I have seen the light and the light is Carlos Vela.
