Oh, come on! - I didn't say it shouldn't be discussed!pixie wrote:And why shouldn`t the story be discussed on here, this is the basement thread for anything non football related?
I said "it surely goes without saying that pretty much everyone would hope he is found safe, but whether people choose to voice that publically on a football forum, of all places, is a personal choice"
I can't control how you interpret my comment... I do suggest that your read it again though.
Anyway, you chose to directly compare this case to that of Madeleine McCann, and used it to quantify how racist Britain is...
But why compare those 2 cases? - are they really that similar? was the ethnic background the only difference between the 2?
Madeleine disappeared without a trace whereas Sahil was taken by armed robbers and a ransom was demanded fairly quickly afterwards. So whilst everyone was in "find Madeleine" mode, this wasn't the case with Sahil, as he hadn't vanished in the same mysterious way.
Then you have the location. Portugal is a familiar place for us Brits, and one that we perceive to be relatively safe and not too far away - it's a place we can associate with, whereas Pakistan, on the other hand, may as well be on another planet! - it's on another continent, and in the news on a daily basis and, compared to Britain, is an extremely volatile place to be. Kidnappings, murder, bombings, etc. are common place.
For the reasons I've briefly mentioned above, I can't say I'm surprised that there are more Madeleine sites than Sahil. Add that to the fact Sahil was kidnapped a week ago, and Madeleine 2-3yrs ago, and your quantifying of racism based on facebook sites looks even more flimsy.
To start a thread with "Britains Aren't racist?

To start a thread with "Britains Aren't racist?", and offer such flimsy evidence, was very poor. I do, however, I think there is definately bias in any country based on race, colour or creed - although, I would imagine Britain is FAR from being one of the worst offenders.

nothing racist about it, it is probably more a class thing if anything. The McCanns being doctors etc for some reason made it a bigger deal in the papers. I forget the name, but not long after Maddie McCann went missing, there was that case where a childs mum pretended her child had been taken, presumably hoping to get donations etc similar to those the mccanns received (the case was on the news so im sure someone will remember it). The mother was white, but she was very much working class, and the story got very little coverage in comparison to the maddie mccann case, and they got fuck all donations, before the police found out the child had never been taken

and i agree that the mccanns were grossly irresponsible, either that or one of the greatest murder cover-ups in criminal history...
