Emirates Cup 2010 - Teams Announced

Post by Gooner_Sam »

Following the huge success of the Emirates Cup for the past three pre-seasons, Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce the details for the Emirates Cup 2010.

Taking place over the weekend of Saturday 31st July and Sunday 1st August, joining the Gunners at Emirates Stadium for this summer's exciting pre-season tournament will be three of Europe's leading football clubs.

Emirates Cup 2010 will see Arsenal joined by Italian powerhouse AC Milan, Scottish giants Celtic and leading French club Lyon, who are all sure to make this a hugely exciting curtain-raiser to the 2010/2011 season.

Similarly to the previous Emirates Cup tournaments, two matches will be played on both Saturday and Sunday, with one ticket giving fans access to both matches on a particular day. The kick-off times on both days are 2pm and 4.20pm, with tickets priced from only £25 for adults and £15 for concessions.

The tournament kicks-off at 2pm on Saturday 31st July with Celtic, who are sure to be followed by thousands of their loyal fans, taking on Lyon. This is followed at 4.20pm with hosts and current Emirates Cup holders Arsenal playing AC Milan.

Sunday's fixtures also start at 2pm, when AC Milan take on Lyon, with Arsenal and Celtic bringing the competition to an exciting climax kicking off the final match at 4.20pm on Sunday afternoon.

Teams will be awarded 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. The competition also rewards attacking play, with teams also being awarded 1 point for each goal they score. In addition, shots on target will also be counted and will be used to decide the tournament winners if teams are level on points and goal difference.

The winners will be presented with the Emirates Cup trophy after the second match on Sunday 1st August.

The Club is pleased to announce that Arsenal members will receive exclusive first rights on purchasing tickets for this high-profile tournament, which will offer many Gunners supporters the first opportunity to see Arsenal play ahead of the 2010/2011 season.

Not a bad day out I suppose...

Gave up with this tournament in 2008. The team AW puts out on the Saturday is an utter joke, and a complete waste of 60,000 fans time, effort, and £25+ entrance fee.

The Sunday is mildly better, but still not worth the asking price in my opinion. Especially when tickets for PL games are just £7 more.

And then there's the clientele. You know, the 30+ deviant kids on some government-organised 'Day out for the Islington Wankers' initiative, all of which are clueless about football and don't watch the game. The so-called adults that do turn up spend it doing mexican waves and crowding around Martin Jol for his autograph before the game starts. And then there were some cheering on Van Nistelrooy the other year, many of whom were probably oblivious to the history between he and us, being that it happened before the Emirates Stadium - and thus the club  - was founded.

So yeah, I really fucking hate this tournament. Good concept - sit in the sun during pre-season, knock back a couple of cold beers, see some new signings and make the most of the season starting again - but in actuality, it's complete garbage. I'll still watch it on the TV though.

PS. During the Arsenal/Juve game in 2008, the girl behind me was shouting, "Kick it in the goal... KICK IT IN THE GOAL"!!! In a high-pitched shriek for the entire second half. And then a throw-in was awarded to us: "THROW IT IIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNN"!

Highbury spins in its grave.
