Why not call Arsenal’s stadium The Armoury? (4/12)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Why not call Arsenal’s stadium The Armoury? (4/12)

usual thread starter… So what are you calling the stadium in your everyday conversation now? If it is the Emirates, I tell you this, you’ll still be using the term a few years after 2021 even if they don’t renew. Force of habit and all that.

I would never never ever call the ground 'the emirates', makes me cringe when i hear it called that. For me now i just go 'over the Arsenal' or 'to Arsenal'. If any thing i would prefer people to call it 'the grove'. Can't really see 'we're the orange quaderant emirates' taking off, sad really.

Should England win their application for the World Cup, and should The 'E******s be one of the designated venues, as is most probable. it will have to change its name anyway. Might as well get a head start. Quite like the idea of The Armoury.

We should have the Woolwich Building Society sponsor us. That way we could call it the Woolwich Arsenal. Back to the Future

For me there is nothing wrong with Ashburton Grove or even "the Grove" which is what the fans would call it. I know that in football money is important but to be fair Ashburton Grove would be a great name. I mean we should have the stadium named after where we are and the Grove is a lot scarier then the Emirates and that is what you want. The Emirates is like an Arena where everybody wants to play and we want people afraid to visit Arsenal not to look for a great experience. Of course we love the beauty of the ground but we want teams afraid to come no matter how nice it looks. But as pointed out money talks loudest and it probably will be sold to the highest bidder as money does speak in football. Although I may not know what I am talking about above one thing I do want is for "Emirates" is not what I want to stick or I would like to see "The Grove" to be what we all call it.

The armoury

I agree with Justin, the name Ashburton Grove / "The Grove" is a good solid name and will not change whoever the sponsor is.
I dont like the E******s as it will change when the sponsors change, which is a bit naff really. Part of the history of the Club is in the name surely? :?:
Also The Armoury is actually a good name for the shop, it suits it.

I tend to use the Emirates quite alot but if somebody asks me where i'm going or am i just say i'm over the Arsenal, it has a ring to it & being at away games in the past other don't quite match a name in what the Arsenal Stadium had
Funny enough i was walking past the stadium the other day & looked up to think what the future will be for it, the new name, the team, the trophies etc etc
When we play in europe the programme prints out that the stadium is the Arsenal stadium due to the sponser's name not allowed in print due to Uefa rules
I couldn't care less what we're called as a stadium as long as the money is good & the name isn't stupid, E****** are funding Arsenal, our team & lets hope soon enough we will get the money's worth of trophies & a excellent team
The ground is feeling more like home every game & i know that there are those faces are see all the time & some just every so often
For us it will always remain what we want to call it, for me it's the Arsenal for you it might be Highbury, who cares? one love one Arsenal 8)

The Armoury is a rubbish idea. Leaving aside the fact that we would be naming our stadium after our club shop, it sounds tacky and like we feel the need to have an aggressive stadium name to intimidate our opponents. Our football is more than sufficient to do that.

It's Ashburton Grove or The Grove and for me always will be.

I'm glad Emirates wanted to associate themselves with our club but I'll never use their name to refer to our stadium. But then I also still refer to the League Cup.

Oh and another reason to use Ashburton Grove: it ties into the local area and emphasises that we are part of the Highbury/Holloway/Islington/Finsbury Park area, which is something I and many others are proud of.

I use to call our stadium-to-be Ashburton Grove but since we moved in, I call it Emirates. But I agree with the guys that want our stadium to be renamed Ashburton Grove in the future.

Because the contract with Emirates is going to expire in 2021 and if it is not renewed; we will have to change the name of the stadium.

Cheers khalid - I thought the implication was that it would have to change because of the world cup

I have started calling the place New Highbury. I won't use the E word and Ashburton Grove sounds like a recycling centre as of course it once was.
