Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta has emerged as a major target for Arsenal if Cesc Fabregas is granted his big-money move to Barcelona, according to reports.
Club captain Fabregas, 23, has rocked Arsene Wenger with his demand to move to his boyhood this summer, and The Times has reported fellow Spaniard Arteta could be set for a switch to the Emirates if the transfer occurs.
Arteta has been a great success on Merseyside since moving to the club in 2005. He shook off a long-term injury in the second half of last season to shine at the heart of the Toffees midfield.
Although never capped for Spain, he is highly rated in the sport and has also been linked with Manchester United. Arteta is currently negotiating a new long-term contract but has been rumoured to be weighing up his options.

Arsenal last night hit back at Barcelona as they battle to cling on to their talismanic skipper Cesc Fabregas.
The Premier League club said Fabregas is going nowhere unless the Spanish giants stump up a fee in the region of the £80million that lured Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid from Manchester United.
Barcelona had hoped to unveil both Fabregas and David Villa at the Nou Camp tomorrow and believe they have agreed terms with the Arsenal player.
His club, however, remain in no mood to do business despite the 23-year-old telling Arsene Wenger on Tuesday that he wants to quit the Emirates to go back to his boyhood team.
New faces: As Barca unveil David Villa (right) the battle for Fabregas goes on...
After signing Villa from Valencia for £34m yesterday, Barcelona’s focus has switched to tying up a deal for Fabregas with the same speed.
Indeed, Barca’s desire to rush through the midfielder’s capture — they want to
conclude a deal before he joins up with the Spain World Cup squad in Madrid on Monday — could prove to be their undoing.
Having intimated the club would take an offer in the region of £50m to even consider doing business, Wenger and the Arsenal ’s board are now so determined to hang on to their captain that they are adamant it will take somewhere in the region of £80m for them to sell.
That would provide Wenger with the funds to land players normally only within the grasp of Barca, Real, Chelsea, Manchester United and, more recently, Manchester City.
Farewell? Will Arsene Wenger be able to keep his young protege at the Emirates?
There is no prospect of Barca parting with that kind of cash for Fabregas, although there is every possibility that an opening bid in the region of £30m will be faxed through to Arsenal today. As of last night no offer, official or otherwise, had been forthcoming.
The fact that Fabregas has five years remaining on his deal at the Emirates, not four as previously believed, certainly strengthens Arsenal’s hand.
Barca were yesterday playing a cagey game, no doubt mindful of remaining on the right side of FIFA’s regulations regarding transfers.
Sporting director Txiki Begiristain said: ‘It’s great news that he wants to come here and I think that one day Cesc will have to come to Barca. But what matters is Arsenal and what their decision is. They think he is a very important player for them. We have to respect that.
‘I wish it was as soon as possible. But we have to respect Arsenal’s wishes and the contract he has. At times the wishes of players do not come true because they are under contract.’
If you can't beat them... Cesc Fabregas scores a penalty against Barca to makeit 2-2 in the Champions League quarter-final, first leg
Fabregas was doubtless hoping for a much more committed message from Barca after plucking up the courage to tell Wenger of his desire to leave.
I'm confused now.....has AW grown some?

tbh nobody knows if Cesc has said he wants to leave. There is absolutley no foundation to this story really. I imagine he's raised his concerns to Wenger and thats where we are. But until he signs for them I wont believe any of the nonsense being reported.
However, hypothetically if Arsenal are taking this stance good on them. I'm sick of Barcelona and there bollocks. In the past few years they've shown themselves to be as bad a Real Madrid, and a bunch of cry baby cheats. Fuck em

heart warming article. http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk/63571,spo ... ndo-torres
They've tweaked the tail and the lion has roared. It appears Barcelona are discovering what Philip II found out in 1588 when he sent his Armada forth to smash England, only to end up at the bottom of the Channel.
After a day in which it appeared Barcelona thought Cesc Fabregas was all but theirs, suddenly the confident Catalans are on the receiving end of an Arsenal fightback and the Gunners' cannon are roaring defiance. According to the Daily Mail Arsenal have told Barca that sure they can have Fabregas - for a cool £80m, nearly three times what the Spanish club thought they could get away with shelling out for the Arsenal skipper.
The paper says that Arsenal's thinking goes along the lines that if Real Madrid paid Manchester United £80m for Cristiano Ronaldo last summer then why shouldn't they be entitled to the same fee? And Arsenal's courageous manning of the barricades has apparently stunned Barcelona, who had intended to present Fabregas and David Villa (recently signed from Valencia) at the Nou Camp today.
Instead the Spanish are weighing up whether to launch a fresh assault for the player or retreat in the face of customary English resistance, albeit led by a Frenchman.
The Daily Mirror says "Arsene Wenger has drawn up the battle lines" and the Arsenal manager has decided that Fabregas must see out his contract, even though the 23-year-old midfielder has allegedly asked to join Barcelona. "We have nothing more to add," was Wenger's war cry yesterday from the steps of the Emirates Stadium, adding: "The more people speak, the less good it does."
And the Mirror says that Arsenal might be entitled to launch an official complaint against Barcelona if rumours are true that last Thursday Fabregas met Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola to discuss terms. That would be against Fifa regulations, and Arsenal's hand has been strengthened since it emerged that in fact Fabregas has five years to run on his existing contract and not the four as first speculated.
But could Barcelona already be on the brink of giving up and looking elsewhere? The Mirror carries another report saying that the club is about to launch "an incredible £70m bid for Fernando Torres".
The Spanish striker has been frustrated at Liverpool's lack of silverware in recent seasons and it's been an open secret that he'll quit if the club doesn't strengthen its squad. Now the Mirror says that with David Villa having just signed for Barcelona, Torres is tempted by linking up with his international striking partner.
But even if Arsenal deflect Barcelona's attentions onto Liverpool, they may still end up grappling with the Old Lady of Turin over Theo Walcott, after it emerged that the England winger is a shock target for Juventus.
According to La Stampa the pacy forward is one of the players that Juve's new boss Luigi Del Neri wants to bring to the club. Del Neri wants to inject some speed into his side's ageing attack and sees Walcott as just the man for the job.
However he admitted that although he wants to "restructure the front and the wings" he must sell players first.
In other news the Sun reports that Manchester City have had a £25m offer for England midfielder James Milner turned down by Aston Villa. The paper says that the deal was for £20m up front with the outstanding amount payable for bonus and appearances, but that it was thrown out by the Midlands club.
"We have received an offer from Manchester City and this has been firmly rejected," said a club statement. "We plan to sit down with James and his representative after the World Cup to agree a new, long-term deal." The 24-year-old Milner, currently training in Austria with the England World Cup squad, has been in City's plans for several weeks but it seems the club must dip into more of their £150m war chest if they want to prise him from Villa Park.
And the same paper says that Manchester United are locked in a tussle with Everton over 19-year-old midfielder Jack Rodwell. The Reds want him for £15m but Everton boss David Moyes is adamant the England Under 21 star is not for sale: But that might still not be enough if the player wants to move. "As far as we are concerned, Jack will be here next season," Moyes told the paper

Arteta is in demand it seems. He has been linked with us, United Spurs and City this week. I think he would be a great signing and natural replacement for Cesc should he go. However I'm not convinced he wants to leave Everton. There are rumours he wants to sign a new deal there so it would take a lot of money to bring him to us.MegaGooner wrote:19-May-2010 6:22:00 PM
