Hailed as the new Goerge Best, I can't honestly remember seeing him play on MOTD or anywhere else.
Same here Sid
We spent 100k on him(a weeks wages for some players today)and he was going to be the new George Best. His first game was at OT and he scored a great individual goal but after that it went downhill.
The signing of Sol the first time was exciting and so funny as well.A top class defender for free

The way he was unveiled at the training ground was excellent as well.donaldo wrote:goonersid wrote:Peter Marinello, although I wasn't really old enough to understand, but it was headline news on tv and all the newspapers.

First one was Supermac - he was viewed as a real big name and a legend in the making, but injury blighted his time with us. Shame really as he has nothing but good to say about the club.
But the biggest, most exciting signing was Bergkamp. Nothing comes close for me. I just could not believe it. I arrived home from work and my dad phoned and said "We signed Dennis Bergkamp!"
I turned on the news (BBC1 had it as a major story!) and I just stood there staring at it. I went out to the back yard and yelled "FUCKING YES!" at the top of my lungs. My then GF thought I had gone mental.
I miss you so much Dennis...

The signings of Dennis Bergkamp and David Platt was big news for a 9 year old kid in 1995. After a dire campaign in 1995 (bar the run in Europe) it really kick started Arsenal again after the dire later years of Graham.
Can remember going to the first game of the season against Boro and it seemed differant, Highbury was sold out and even though it was a 1-1 draw there was a new sense of optamism round the place. Being a naive 9 year old I thaught we would win the league that season.

i agree biggest and most exciting imo were Bergkamp and platt
i dont think people realise or give him much credit, and a lot openly dislike him, but david platt was at the time a massive signing given what hed done in the game. admittedly he wasnt outstanding for us, but he was decent and made significant contributions in the double winning season.
the winner vs united for example
