Yes, he's the obvious one to be replaced. Unless we can get some money for him though, isnt this going to be a significant increase in wages?
1989 has just done me in, I was firm, and upright (with this Joe Cole news) NOW after his post I'm as flaccid as one of Almunia's hand when (attempting) saving a shot at our goal.... :? :?

Don't want to cast doubts on the veracity of nuttypaul's source but the way I read that, it's even worse!!

Paul's mate is Frank McLintock's son; and Scott's mate's mate, who holds a position high up in a Scottish Bank, is Joe Cole's agent's mate.

YEP LETS JUST WAIT AND SEE , AS I SAID TO SCOT I HOPE HE IS RIGHT .

I take the point, I'd have definitely have him but only if it doesn't affect our transfers for more important players. In terms of wages, if we now lose TR7 then I suspect the wage gap won't be bank busting and as for a signing on fee I can't see us paying more than 5mill which, considering he's prob worth £12mill or so is pretty good business. This all hinges on whether we actually have moeny though, if what we are told to believe is true we always have money just won;t ever over pay so this shouldn't affect any other transfers

What worries me though is AW saying he was going to do his business before the WC...that's 5 days to buy a centre back and a keeper and no evidence that we are remotely close to signing either

You don't know that, he could have do all his business and they'll be announced after the World Cup.

Well I just don't see the point of people doom mongering over the smallest of things. The window isn't even open yet. I feel people are desperate to have a go. Plus lets face it, did anyone really think we were going to sign everyone before the World Cup?

Business before the WC was never going to happen, we will be last in the Q for anybody of any significance or proclaiming that we have unearth another hidden gem from France for 4/5M<..!

I really like J Cole as a player but do we really need him?

It depends.....if we are after a player or players competing in the world and dont sign them before world cup starts then we run the risk of their value increasing should they perform well in south africa. On the other hand if we signed them before the tournament they could get crocked out there (standard initiation when joining our club :( ) and could have money tied up in injured players.

Personally I would prefer the former plan rather than the latter and I cant understand wenger making these statements every summer (about doing his dealings early) if he never backs it up with actions  In my opinion being proactive sends a positive message out to our players, fans and rivals that we are ambitious and are aiming higher next season. Again it is only my opinion but were we to take this course of action then it might convince cesc to tell barca that he doesnt want to leave us yet

Yes but the chances of these deals being announced before the World Cup are very slim. A lot of times the deal has been completed and will be announced after the tournament. That happens nearly every World Cup/Euro.

Arsenal Will Only Sign Joe Cole If The Chelsea Midfielder Drops Wage Demands By 50 Per Cent

Gunners keen to make a move for England star but will not be held to ransom

EXCLUSIVE

By Wayne Veysey | Chief correspondent

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will only sanction a move for Joe Cole if the England star drops his £120,000-a-week wage demands, and prove his long-term fitness.

Arsenal have jumped to the head of the queue of clubs lining up to secure Cole’s signature, but the club are unwilling to shatter their salary structure to tie up a deal for a player with a chequered recent fitness record.

Comment: Cole a luxury for his club but a necessity for his country
Goal.com readers believe Manchester United is the best place for Cole
Manchester United have also asked to be kept informed of developments and it is understood that Old Trafford would be Cole’s first choice of destination.

But United would be unwilling to give Cole the four-year contract that he is looking for, even though the 28-year-old is available on a free transfer.

The midfielder has already informed Chelsea that he intends to exercise his right to leave under freedom of contract.

Wenger is a big admirer of the player and exploratory talks have been held with Cole’s advisers but the Arsenal manager does not view the player in the same bracket as top earner Cesc Fabregas, who is on £110,000-a-week.

Although the Frenchman has a £45 million transfer kitty this summer, the figure is believed to cover first-year salaries as well as transfer fees.

If Fabregas moved to Barcelona it would remove the club’s highest earner from the wage bill, but Wenger is believed to be willing to sanction a deal that would provide Cole a basic £80,000-a-week with performance and appearance-related bonuses.

There is also concern at the Emirates Stadium regarding Cole’s fitness. The midfielder missed the second half of the 2008-09 season with knee ligament damage and, after missing the build-up to the current campaign, has suffered from a string of minor ailments and struggled to cement a place in Chelsea’s team.

Arsenal rejected the chance to sign Patrick Vieira on a free transfer last season because they were led to believe he would not pass a medical.

Cole has said that he will wait until after the World Cup to sort out his future but it is likely that the deal will be done before that time.

++++

Hmmm.... :?

I don't really believe anything Goal reports, they don't seem to be the most reliable of websites.

John Cross seems to be pretty adamant the deal isn't happening, which slightly worries me and goes against all I've heard.

There is no excuse for us not matching J.Coles wage demands. He is a free transfer FFS.Just like when we bought Sol the 1st time the money we saved from the transfer fee went to pay Sol's 100k a week wages

If we dont sign him our board really are a bunch of tight fisted bastards :banghead: :banghead:
