Team kit colours

Post by Swale_Gooner1985 »

Do people get too hung up on thinking a football teams shirt should be a certain colour?

Looking at a few of the top clubs in England, their kits have changed massively over time, hardly any of the clubs i checked, with the exception of Chelsea, started with the colour strip they have now, Liverpool started with Blue and White, Man United started with yellow and green, We started with all red shirts and blue socks, Tottenham started in blue, and even wore red after that, then a Hull type shirt.

Kits change and when you think about it, it doesnt make that much difference.

So many people moan about the colour of our away kits, but when you look at it, we have basically had a mixture of yellow and blue kits, with the odd white one or green one thrown in somewhere.

Look at other teams away kits through the years, Man United have had, Grey, White, Black, Yellow, Blue, Gold and green, they have had striped, hoops, quarters and diamonds.

Liverpool have had Yellow, White, Black, Green, Beige and Grey

Chelsea are similar, having had Orange, grey, yellow, white, navy, black, red and even those awful illuminous kits.

Our shirts are definitely not as bad as people make out, and the away kit isnt actually that important what colour it is or what it looks like, certainly no need to get as worked up as some do.

I agree that red and white should be our home kit, and accept that the majority of people want yellow as our away, but it isnt that important, and away kits do generally change, not many clubs stick with the same away shirt colour season after season when you look at it?

it didnt go down well and i imagine that was the reason the club got rid of it after one year,, i still bought one

i agree with swale to a certain degree. i dont care what colour the away shirt is because it is not important but the home shirt should always have red body with white sleeves... that is the arsenal style and should never be allowed to change,

I personally loved it because it seemed other clubs were releasing funky strips while we had the same sort of design for ages. I guess the majority of gooners - like now - were against the colour change.

Why on earth did they think of green though? It looks awful in my opinion and back in the early 80s most teams goalkeepers shirts were green?

Sorry, Swale - but you just epitomise everything that is wrong with the yoof of today and alot of our younger fans.

The club are corroding something that I and most Gooners of my generation hold dear. It is called tradition and it is one of the things that used to make our club stand out from the rest. :(

Home jersey = red body/white sleeves, white shorts.
Away Jersey = yellow jersey, blue shorts.

Let them fuck around with different colours in the training tops, hoodies, tracksuits etc.

That wasn't a good mod application from Swale was, was it?

It matters to me not only in terms of respecting what has been built up, it is also indicative of all clubs who believe that they can pretty much do anything, and the fans will follow like sheep (which we do  )

Have to agree with this. Swales post reads to me like something the club would release to justify their decision to change things again.

You talk about tradition, and yes that is quite important, however it isnt as important as everyone is making out.

Plus the point i am making is that Yellow is not the only traditional colour, we started in white away shirts, moved to blue, and since then its been a mix of blue and yellow, so why does that make yellow our traditional colour?

Teams tend to change the colour of their away shirt, and thats not just a new things, thats happened for as long as away kits have existed

Thats the point im making

I get your point but I would counter "tradition" is not the same as "original". Yes we may have started in white away but we associate yellow away because of many factors; the players and legends that played in that colour for decades, the huge moments in the clubs history that coincided with yellow away (1971 Double, 1979 FAcup , Anfield 89 etc). It is this combination of things that build "tradition".

We originally played in an all red kit loaned from Forest but that is not our "traditional" home kit either, the red body/white sleeves is, because of the same criteria as the away kit; who wore it, when it was worn and the impact it had on us as a club and as fans.

It's a basic premise of being a Gooner that yellow is our "traditional" away colour. The cannon is our "traditional" emblem but it certainly wasn't our original emblem. Would you give up the cannon as quickly?

I personally haven't minded the last 2 away kits, but for me the best kits (home and away) are the ones we had in the 03/04 season.
