The continual demise of Match of the Day (12/12)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The continual demise of Match of the Day (12/12)

usual thread starter… I used to enjoy Match of the Day as a kid, and you definitely got the flavour of the two featured matches which they used to cover in the 1970s. I do agree that some of the editing is a bit lazy now, but the real shame for me is that I really am not particularly bothered about watching even highlights of games that don’t affect Arsenal. And that’s because the game has changed beyond recognition and only four teams have any chance of winning the title these days. And that is something I’d like to see change. They manage to have a chance in Spain, even with Real and Barca’s financial advantage. Shame it isn’t more open here…

Agree completely with the article. Its got to the stage now that if we're not on MOTD I often don't even bother to watch it. Trouble is that showing a game live, or showing two minute segments that don't reflect the match, makes for cheap TV.

Also, I wonder whether Fergie, Allardyce or Rednapp would get away with blanking Sky, if one of Murdoch's boys had upset them? Er, no. I don't think so!

It's The Premiership and whether you like it or not, there are 19 other teams in it. I don't want to read about a player doing well at another club without being able to watch him myself. We are never bottom of the list on MOTD and we usually get a good bit of air time. I like it as it is and I wouldn't watch it if it went to ITV with a short bit of programme before they go to their favourite bit, their bastard adverts. If that happens again then I would give up.

I too gave up on MOTD years ago - for all of those reasons. And now it's superfluous. Gavin - you need to invest in Sky Sports. Every Saturday night they show one match IN FULL and extended highlights (50 mins) of all the other Premiership games in interactive. Intelligent observations too from Nigel W. Starts at 8.25pm, so with a decent bottle of red wine you can keep watching till well into the early hours. Unless of course you select S**** which will probably send to to sleep or die laughing - if the booze doesn't get you first...
