Getting it in the neck - Again!!

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Getting it in the neck - Again!!

Post by tomkingsbury »

After sitting back and generally feeling rather indifferent concerning the appointment of England's next antional manager which rather unsurprisingly was Cappello, I wondered how long will it be before the media and thus the public turn on arsenal (again) and blame us for the amount of foreign managers successfully managing british teams and taking all the jobs from our crop of 'talented' managers??
If nothing more, Cappello's appointment singles out the humiliating reality of the quite severe lack of top quality british managers and coaches. Now its this lack of english and british talent that's been heavily followed in the press (with rather a large number of pictures of arsenal) and although i think it would be stupid to say the influx of foreign players hasnt had some (NOT ALL) impact on the amount of english players in the first team of the Premier League, if the academies arent producing players up to scratch, then clubs will buy cheaper talent elsewhere -simple. Academies arent producing good enough players and to blame Wenger and Arsenal for that is ridiculous.
For Platini to come out and say Wenger is wrung for finding young talent and buying it is also rather ignorant: isn't it one of many jobs of a modern manager to be able to find promising talent at reasonable prices rather than paying outrageous sums on alleged domestic talent. Wenger is still grooming this talent into the finished article, and if it was coming through our acedemies, believe me Wenger wouldnt be spending money.
Similiarly with the appointment of Capello we have eerily moved back to when Eriksson was installed as England's first foreign national manager which was met with a distinct mix of good and bad views. Much was said of the need for a quality English manager but none were around: the same is today and McLaren's reign was purely because the FA felt that England needed an English manager. As humiliating as it might be to some that the home of football needs a foreigner in charge, we have no better option, and one has to ask when did England really, truely have a quality English manager last? Hoddle? Taylor? Venables? None, and i'd argue that Bobby Robson was the last and even then he had many problems to overcome, and i'm sure some may argue we havent had one since Sir Alf.
I remember Germany had a crisis over a lack of German talent coming through many years ago, but the World Cup certianly showed they have a wealth of competent young players at international level (Podoloski, Schweinsteiger, Mertesekcer, Lahm) and most strong european countries have a number of quality coaches and managers to choose from, and in fact it appears only the smaller countries call upon 'foreign' managers to help their team i.e. Leo Beenhakker for T&T and Poland, Guus Hiddink - Australia and Russia, whilst countries such as Italy, France and Brazil would never break (nor need to) from employing a manger from their respective countires.
So what this glaringly points out to the media, rather than it being arsenal's fault that a lack of birtish talent is coming through, that the whole structure from coaches through to academies needs a huge re-think if we truly want be back amongst the best rahter than believing it is ordained.

Little harsh on Venables aside, you do have some valid points. Still, long term things don't sell papers and proper journalism should be avoided at all costs :P
