Vermaelen wasnt an unknown though was he cos he was an established international before he joined us and had played in hollands top division for a few seasons (may not be top quality level but certainly better than the french 2nd division). There is a big difference in a player being unknown and a player being unknown in the uk and Ireland cos we are seperated from mainland europe and may not be as clued in as a result

Cant get excited about this signing (has he actually signed yet)?
and As augie said Vermaelen was a Belgian International with over 20 caps and captain of Ajax hardly an unknown

Vince, I've heard his torn between playing for either France and Poland, surely with alot of the old guard of the French team either retiring or axed from the squad, there must be a place for him within the French squad now?Vince wrote:Koscielny isn't someone coming from nowhere. If you follow the great competition that is the french Ligue 1, he's been doing very well last season, he was one of the best center back in the league. And he could have been in the French squad for the WC (so he's lucky!).

yeah definitely, if he signs at Arsenal, he'll be in the next French squad. No doubt about that. He was only thinking about Poland when it was his only chance to be international, but now he's got a real chance to play for France.franksav63 wrote:Vince, I've heard his torn between playing for either France and Poland, surely with alot of the old guard of the French team either retiring or axed from the squad, there must be a place for him within the French squad now?Vince wrote:Koscielny isn't someone coming from nowhere. But again Bergkamp was an international player that had excelled in an ajax team that were held in much higher esteem than they are now so really it wasnt that much of a risk signing him

Atleast we signed him for 2mill unlike the reported £11mill being banded around. Considering Vermaelen was signed from a prestigious talent developing club like Ajax for 10mill euros, I would say we are being taking by Lorient.augie wrote:Vince wrote:Koscielny isn't someone coming from nowhere.
