As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
Seriously man it is too early in the day to be talking shite......he may not have hit the heights on a consistant enough basis and sometimes may appear to work hard enough but useless ?? He is one of the very few absolutely gifted class players in our squad so I dont fcuking think so

Don't agree really on retiring numbers unless it's exceptional circumstances like a players death like Ray Jones for QPR or Vivien Foe for Man City.
Why don't we retire the number 14 shirt (Henry) or the number 6 shirt (Tony Adams) as well. One day another legend will wear the number 10 shirt and it could be RVP if he stays and gets us winning trophies againIf for example we had retired the number 7 shirt after Brady left then we wouldn't have had heros like Rocastle or Pires gracing the shirt.

i just don't see The Dennis the same way you do then, mate. the other players you mention are legends that helped us win titles and achieve great things, and all that. dennis for me is as much of a "turning point" in arsenal's history as the arrival of arsène. the guy changed how people looked at the game. of course, it's a lot of personal interest here, as i became a gooner because of him, but i do think that what he helped this club achieve and the way he changed how people see this team is something we really won't see anytime soon.
like you mention, van persie can do great things and help us win titles and become a legend, but he'll never change the arsenal so much like dennis did.
as a professional, as a footballer, as a character... there won't be another dennis, of that i'm sure. that's why i'd retire the number 10

Retiring shirts is an american sports phenomenon imo. They use the numbers from 1 to 99.
Football is mostly number 1 til 11, so if you retire numbers from time to time there will be only numbers like 52 or 23 on the field. Such things don't please me. I am against retiring numbers.

Have you been watching football lately??!! 1 to 11??!!!
brazilianGOONER wrote:i think you are all forgetting the fact that there won't be another dennis, so numbers won't have to be retired any time again
How do you know that?
If you retire number 10 then Rocky's number 7 should (or should have) also be retired IMO. Then the ball starts rolling and you end up with high squad numbers.
Call me a traditionallist and I do like the squad numbering but I prefer the 1-11 and in the right positions. A right back wearing 3!
