Erm what? My point stands, you cannot jdge the standard of someone just because we signed him from a lower team. There are a number of players hwo have been picked up from lower leagues and succeeded. Look at Joleon Lescott at Wolves, he just went for 22 million. Give the guy a chance and get behind himand how much did we pay for him ? You also cannot escape the fact that the english league was a very primitive place back then and tough centre backs like bouldie were exactly what were needed whilst nowadays there are some shit hot attacking players with great technical ability that this guy will not have faced in ligue 2
Arsenal Sign Centre Back Laurent Koscielny
Augie you seem to be intent on proving this guy is shit, when really you have no idea if he is or not.

I didnt deny the transfer fee was 10m, that was somebody else, they said it was 6m. All I said was that the first offer of 4m was an insult and that most fans have been passing judgements too soon. So, I guess there is no need to apologise over it!augie wrote:OnlyGotOneSong wrote:Why single me out? Seriously, its a forum and people have different opinions, that's the beauty of a debate, why you needed to bring me into it I really dont know. Not only did you have no input to the argument, you try and belittle my career. Wow. You, or anybody else on this forum for that matter, do not know me, therefore you cannot pass judgements on my knowledge or anything else to do with me. You lot like making judgements without evidence dont you!the playing mantis wrote:im in complete agreement with augie, about the seemingly overinflated fee here.
sure he could be a great signing, but weve been shafted on the price seemingly, even if he is a future star, for the simple facts there was little competition, he is unproven at a decent level (no one can argue with this ligue 1 is weak, as are lorient) and we could have got him much cheaper if he had demanded to leave and we bid 6-7 mill along with coqulin.
we look like wev'e been ripped off.
also its hardly strengthening to replace a decorated france international cb with an uncapped player.....
(o and although im not a 'personal financial advisor' great, knowledable people that they are.....
i do have an economics degree from a top uni so think im qualified to comment that this looks a lot of money on a guy who poland havent even courted...)
Why bring my nationality into this ? It's not like I give a shit or anything but I cant see the relevance of it![]()
Anyway as regards you being singled out can I suggest that you chill a little bit ? If I offended you with my tongue in cheek remarks about your choice of profession then I apologise (sometimes you have bad days and things dont look the same on the computer as they sound in your head). I would suggest that your refusal to accept the transfer fee being reported basically singled you out as somebody who will defend the indefensible but ce la vie. What matters now is that the transfer fee is indeed 10m as reported and we were right and you were wrong but dont feel that you need to apologise over it

These fans you speak of are just worried about whether this guy can cope or not. They were hoping for Wenger to go for someone more experienced, as clearly inexperience has not been working for us in the last 5 years or so. Wenger has taken a chance by signing this man. Should we really be taking chances at this stage when we havnt won a thing in 5 years and are facing serious competition for europe??EC3 wrote:Does make me wonder about some so called fans.
Bloke hasn't even kicked a ball yet and people are assuming he isn't up to the job, give the fella a chance.
How much did Utd pay for Smalling and i believe he was at Maidstone until recently.
United can afford to take a chance with smalling, they win something every year literally.

On the contrary mate.....all I am saying is that for a 24 year old of so limited experience he is very much overpriced. People talk about english players being overpriced hence the need to buy foreign but would you not agree that it would be possible to buy a similar player of age and experience from the english league for that fee ? My other gripe would be the need for a proven quality player....imo we have a team of inexperienced players who have won fcuk all and badly badly need some proven and sometimes steadying guile to lead this team from nearly men into winners and you cannot dispute that this guy does not bring that quality to the table. This player could indeed turn out to be a very good buy (god knows thats what we all want) but at this stage I believe that he is overpriced and I find it apalling that a manager who will pay 10m for this player will only spend 3.5m on a keeper

You mean someone like Gary Cahill? Premier League experience, 75 apps for Bolton in 2 seasons, 4 caps for England U-21's, same age as Koscielny, half an inch taller, £15 mill. Better the devil I dont know tbh.augie wrote:rigsby wrote:Augie you seem to be intent on proving this guy is shit, when really you have no idea if he is or not.Erm what? Saying someone on here is Irish isn't exactly narrowing things down. Just a step up from saying that you think he might have been an Arsenal fan.....
I don't think it's writing the guy off to say that paying £10m for someone who isn't an international, hasn't played for a top side and, in all likelihood, is probably now our first choice CB is ever so slightly "high risk".... He could turn out to be a superstar and all credit to Wenger for discovering him. But you can't deny that it's high risk for a team who have delusions of grandeur and for whom there will be no time allowed for settling in.....
That said, at least he isn't another 17 year old who we'll buy, develop, see in the Carling Cup then ship out on loan. At least he has all the makings of someone who might be able to drop straight in to the team.
