Not the best example Rigsby. United went from Champions for 3 consecutive years and European cup winners and then runners up to fuck all when Ronaldo went :?

Youve got me even more worried now :worried:

As long as we have Arsene we have no need to worry!

Keep the faith

In Arsene I trust

I get your point, but what I meant is that players can step up. Nani for instance was excellent last season for them, and Valencia had a good season as well. Sure it'll take time to replace Fabregas, for someone to be as good as him, but its possible. Nasri for instance is good enough. I still think regardless of if he stays or goes, if we add to the defensive side of things more we'll be stornger next year. Perhaps over optimistic of me, but I remember the doom and gloom when Henry left and we nearly ended up winning it that year

I still maintain he will be with us next season.

But to throw my thoughts into the debate.........

If Fabregas wants to go, he goes - il be disapointed because he is clearly a class player, but if he doesnt want to play for us, then on your way son, id rather have the money. Arsenal will continue, no player is bigger than the club no matter how talented.

There is no doubting Cesc is class, but had he not joined Arsenal when he did I doubt he would have made the leaps and bounds he has, who knows, had he stayed at Barca his opportunities may have been limited and he may not have even made the squad for the championships and WC at such a young age. Arsenal gave him the platform and opportunity to reach the excellent level he is at now.

I don't buy into this "other players have let him down" - of course he is one of the bets players in the team. but Cesc is as much to blame for us not winning anything as any other player, he is part of a team, and whatsmore is captain of that team. In my opinion before last season he was very much under-acheiving, and was being helped by the players around him in certain periods. This is to be expected of a young player of course, and the new system and being made captain has certainly brought out the best in him for sure. But he has been in many semi finals, finals and massive league games for this club and id argue he hasnt shone to the extent other world class players do - the opportunities have been there for him to make his mark on a big stage at Arsenal.

Would I blame cesc for going to Barca? Not really, they are obviously above Arsenal at the current time and it is a club he loves.

Do i think Cesc loves Arsenal? I think he, unlike others in the past, is fully aware of what Arsenal have done for him and is thankful for it, he makes that clear, and should he stay I have no doubt he will continue to fight for us.

Do i class him among players like Adams et al, Seaman, Bergkamp, Henry, Pires as Arsenal legends? No.

I agree with the Henry thing but i feel Cesc will be more difficult to repalce than anyone of recent times Henry, Bergkamp, Vieira, Wright etc were all on their way down and missing quite a few games with injuries when they left where as Cesc is the focal point of the team and lets not kid ourselves carries the team at times. For all of Nasri' good points i actually think he is gutless and goes missing a. away from home nearly every match and b. if he gets hit with a hard tackle something Cesc never does so to replace him with Nasri i think wouldnt work. I think if Cesc goes Wenger has to spend some/most of the money to find a suitable replacement

He would then know 100% that he was part of something special and to be honest he hasnt got that with Arsenal. Barca have to much to offer him.

I think the argument that cesc might not hold water tbh - look how many of the barca players have come through their ranks and more relevantly how many of cesc's group has come through. Good players will always rise to the top and barca epitomise this more than any other club really :(

You say that if he doesnt want to play for uswe should let him go but is there a clause to that deal ? I mean surely there would be a minimum price that you think the club should accept (mine would be £40m) for cesc and for that reason alone I cant see him going unless he attempts to force his way out and seeing as I cant see him doing that so imo we stand a very good chance of having a player lead us next season with his heart already in barca :(

I also think that you are being extremely harsh in holding cesc as culpable for the teams failures as players like almunia, fabinski, diaby, denilson etc :o Surely you would concede that it makes it that much harder to shine when you are playing alongside such shite as the players I listed above ? Compare that to the performance of cesc in last sundays world cup final or throughout the european championship finals two years ago and you will see a cesc that shines when he is surrounded by players of a similar level to himself.

Basically cesc is our heartbeat imo and will be sorely missed whenever he leaves us and I agree 100% that there is nobody currently in our squad that will be capable of filling his role in the team. At this stage I too think that he should be sold but only for an acceptable fee

Yep, i totally agree that should we have players of that calibre it might make him stay - but for many reasons (that are far too long-winded to go into) Arsenal will not have players like Villa in the forseeable.

As i say, if he feels Trophies are more likely at Barca - i can understand his view and would wish him luck, but he hasnt done enough to be a real legend in my eyes - he is a very very good player in a team that we all know needs improving - but he isnt at the same level of or true legends for me.

Some people make out that he is the only player in the team that can play football...would he have had such a great year if Song wasnt working his bollocks off behind him? Or if Nasri etc were not creating space for him?

Arsenal are not as good as Barca, we need improving in obvious areas - but we are not a bad bloody team you know.

Ask the same question about Cesc i think it would be split, and thats my point, calling him a "legend" is throwing around a strong term very fllipantly.

The comparable with Brady doesnt work for me, Brady scored massive goals in massive games, had massive contributions in massive games and from what Ive read single-handedly carried Arsenal at times, as well as being one of the best footballers ever seen play for Arsenal - thats why, despite the lack of trophies he is regarded as a legend. For me, Cesc hasn't / doesnt.

You convieniently missed out Brady from that list..... The feelings about Cesc are strong as he will leave soon and deep down all of us are disappointed and pissed off about it but if Brady is considered a legend then so is Cesc as they have won the same amount of medals, always gave 100% and both inspired Arsenal teams that lacked in certain areas

Got cut off half-way through, spoke about my view on the brady thing below

Il be honest, i didnt see Brady live - but through my Dad ive learnt all about him, read the books, watched the videos (im sadly obssessed with gooners) and for me it doesnt compare with Cesc.

Its an interesting point - but as i say, some will say Cesc is, some will say he isnt - and thats the point, for other players it isnt even up for discussion.

Its amazing how similar the circumstances would be if he does go, thats for sure, but I dont think we would see a barron spell like we did after Brady left - we still have some very good footballers in our squad.

Fair enough i get cut off half way through sometimes too

I think the Brady/Cesc situation is very similar and when the bitterness wears off in 5, 10, 20 or 30 years time he will be considered a great

What? Firstly, he's only captain in order to try and appease him, like when Henry was. As for talisman and only class player, again I suggest that your thinking is black and white. He's a good player in a decent football team, but talisman is a bit far. Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira were talismen.

I think that Vermaelen, Sagna, Clichy, Song might take offence to you saying Fabregas is our "only class player". And even if he was our only class player, so what? We'll get loads of cash for him and be able to buy 2-3 players to strengthen the team, and that will have more influence than a single Fabregas.
augie wrote:What happened to the notion that the players are there to serve the club ? Wenger happened - nowadays the players loyalty (or whats left of it) is to wenger and not to our club :(
As usual, I think you're stating opinion as if it's a fact. How the hell do you know where players' loyalty lies? Did you have tea with Bendtner last week? If I had to be pushed, I'd say that the players' loyalty is mainly to themselves, in most cases these days. But to suggest that because of our manager, the rule that no player is bigger than the club is somehow broken, is crazy. And do you think Arsenal is the only club that suffers from lack of player loyalty? The money these days means that loyalty is already dwindling at every professional club, and it's only going one way unless the TV companies go bust.

I know that the size of our transfer kitty is a debate that will keep raging for some time yet but one thing that cannot be denied is that in the last 12 months the club has paid off 10 years worth of mortgage repayments in advance - if that money had of been invested in a keeper we could be going into this new season as defending champs instead of a club desperately trying to keep hold of our skipper :(
How can you possibly claim to speak for the vast majority of fans? You're a bloke on an Internet forum! It's amazing that considering you think that we have "one class player", we were merely a keeper away from winning the championship. That must mean we have some other class, unless you think that you can win the league with no class. You can't have your cake and eat it.
augie wrote:You speak positively about winning the league within the next 10 years but my question for you is how ? Show me a club that sells all of its best players and still wins trophies - you can well point to the young talent coming through but if we keep selling the better players in our team wont we continually be in transition ? What quality player in his right mind would want to stay at a club under these circumstances ? There is a shit load wrong with the workings of our club and the thinking behind it and until that changes sucess is not coming our way anytime soon
How? Because that's the way of the world. Sometimes you go through lean years. Sometimes you win the league. It's funny that you talk about the young players - few of them look interesting, but if I had 50 million to spend at Arsenal, I'd spend it on youth stuff. We can't outspend the richest clubs, so it makes sense to "grow our own".

As for selling all of our best players, I struggle to think of many players whose careers have gone up after leaving Arsenal.
augie wrote:You compare cesc leaving with splitting up with a bird - in my experience you hope that when a bird leaves you hope that have been the one doing the screwing up to that point but with every good player leaving our club it feels like it is the club that is doing the screwing and it is us fans that are on the receiving end  :x
Well, it might feel like that to you, but I suggest that there is a difference between feelings and facts, and you interpret the facts as you want to. It's your choice to be negative. That is why not everyone is constantly moaning even though we are all looking at the same situation. Why are you being screwed? Nobody's forcing you to support the club. Nobody's forcing anyone to buy an overpriced pie at the new stadium. I don't believe that constant negativity is beneficial to anyone or anything.

I don't think the current situation is great, but I wouldn't swap places with fans of any other club, and on that basis I'm grateful for what I have. And when we next win the league it will taste all the sweeter for the (relative) current adversity.
