Who was??

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Who was??

The Last Wenger Signing that actually got you excited, like when you was a kid and Charlie Nicholas joined or When David Dein went and got Dennis. I think the last one I felt anything about was Jose Reyes (although he ended more in the Charlie mould rather than Dennis) That was 2004, So much for moving to the emirates to compete, year after year we are sold short. Nearly 7 years !! Too long Arsene Too Long

For me it has to be Laurent Koscielny. It came totally out of the blue when we got him. Don't know how on earth they supressed any rumours. And it was against the odds as everyone else seemed to be after him.....

Next on my list would be Charlie Nicolas followed closely by Malcolm MacDonald.....which really does show how rarely we make purchases that set the pulse racing. Good job then that we have an excellent record of making untrumpetted signings that come good.

The last time for me was Sol Campbell (the first time we got him) it was such a long drawn out affair, a bit like the Cesc thing :? , and being captain of the scum i never for one moment believed he would want to sign for us when i heard it on the radio and working with loads of scum i was ecstatic :happydance:

I pretty much agree with the sol and reyes suggestions - I remember working in the family pub the day sol signed and there was a big crowd in cos there was a funeral in the area and all of a sudden sky news had breaking news that sol had signed for us and I went absolutely mental behind the counter

I also remember being excited by the reyes signing as he was a player coveted by a lot of the big clubs and yet he signed for us 8) I had seen a tiny bit of him at that stage and I thought he would do really well for us and I will always believe that he would have done so only for henry's treatment of him :( :x

The missus was only saying to me yesterday that we never make signings anymore that get the fans excited. Personally I cannot understand it cos big players will more often than not pay for themselves with increased revenue through merchandising, sponsorship etc

I nearly crashed my car when it was announced on the radio we signed Sol Campbell I was that surprised !

I got very excited when we signed Jose Antonio Reyes, I had just witnessed him destroy Real Madrid whilst a Seville player and I expected him to be a world beater once he had got used to the rigours of the English game.

Proves what I know.

(I also nearly came the day we signed Bergkamp)

My greatest memory of Reyes was when he went down injured against Real Madrid in the Bernabeau and then rolled back onto the pitch to hold up play  !

I will always remember his two goals against Chelsea in the FA Cup back in the days when we used to beat Chelsea at least twice a season.

That's why I said "similar", and not "identical". There's generally only a handful of players fans have been excited about signing, whichever way around you flip it.
