Pacquiao to pursue new opponent

Manny Pacquiao will start negotiations with Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto after a deadline to agree a clash with American Floyd Mayweather Jr expired.

Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said talks with unbeaten Mayweather to arrange a bout for 13 November were now over, although the clash could still happen.

A fight with Mayweather for earlier in 2010 was called off over Pacquiao's failure to agree to blood testing.

"The fight we wanted is Mayweather, but he didn't want to commit," said Arum.

The pair are considered the two best pound-for-pound boxers in the sport and a fight between them would likely be the richest in history.

And after Filipino Pacquaio succumbed to Mayweather's blood and urine testing requests in May it looked as if a fight between the pair would happen in November.

"I am sure, without knowing, that there is a very good reason why Mayweather hasn't committed at this time," added Arum.

Arum suggested that the issue over drug testing had been resolved and speculated that the pending trial of Mayweather's uncle and trainer Roger over a charge - which he has denied - of attacking a female boxer could be why the undefeated American would not agree to fight this year.

"I really believe this issue with the uncle has an affect," continued Arum.

"If I were in his shoes I wouldn't want to go into this big fight without my trainer."

Pacquiao defeated Cotto (35 wins and two defeats) in November 2009 and could agree a rematch with the Puerto Rican fighter or take on Mexican Margarito (38-6), who has only just returned to the ring after being banned for a year for wearing illegal hand wraps.

Arum said he expected it to take only a week to negotiate a contract with either opponent, both of whom fight in his Top Rank stable.

"I have to discuss with Manny to see who he prefers. The decision falls on Manny," stated Arum.

Arum also suggested that Pacquiao could fight Mayweather in 2011, although the Filipino who has just been elected into congress in his homeland said in May that he would only fight once more.

Well looks like its off again :banghead: .

According to sky Bob Arum has given Mayweather and extra 10 days to sign a contract.....lets just see.

I would think Pacquiao would want a warm-up fight anyway so maybe not. It is risky in boxing but it would make this fight better if they both got at least one fight in ahead of it given that they aren't fighting or training to fight regularly.

I doubt ring rust will be an issue for Manny considering how active he has been over the last 2yrs in comparison to Floyd.

Agreed.

Also wonder if the talk of this next fight isn't a negotiating tool to try to get Mayweather to sign to fight now.

Not really, Manny has always said he wants to stay active and a fight with Margarito/Cotto part 2 has always been on the table should the Mayweather deal fail to materialize.

Unlike Floyd, Manny wants to go down in history for fighting and beating the best in his time.

Put better by Larry Merchant when speaking on Mayweather's comment on being better than Ali (what a joke  )

Mayweather is about money
Manny is about boxing.

Cheers for that link - Merchant is pretty spot-on there, and you're right as well.

Matyweather is the pound-for-pounf fighter of his era, but the simple truth is and its easy to forget Muhammad Ali was the pound-for-fighter of his generation - a unique phenomenon of size speed and athleticism as a bixer. Think of any other fighter beyond the middleweight class with close to foot and hand spped and dexterity of movement Ali - or Cassius Clay - displayed. I was too young to see him as Clay or even as young Ali live . But watching the films - he simply was the Greatest before his title was taken.. He was 40-60 pounds heavier than Mayweather but had as good or better hand and foot speed movement balance and defense and while he was no Soony Liston or Mike Tyson he still could stop more than his share of opponents. Mayweather will never be another Ali or close to it. Even his personality is nothing to Ali's and I don't mean than as mere criticism - Ali was or became the Greatest.

One of the great unanswered questions in sport is how great would Ali have been had he been free to fight from 1967-69 without interruption by the U.S. Government.

I would prefer 2011 as it would give me a better chance of going to the fight. I can't see Mrs Goose being too pleased if I told her I am off on my 4th Vegas trip in 2 years to watch the boxing again.
