CHAMPIONS LEAGUE games will have two additional assistant refs next season.
A FIFA technical committee made the decision in Cardiff yesterday following trials of goal-line officials in the Europa League.
It was also decided that goal-line technology will be on the agenda in October following the latest blunder in the World Cup.
Frank Lampard had a clear equaliser ruled out in England's 4-1 defeat by Germany in South Africa.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter, speaking after that game, said: "It would be a nonsense not to reopen the file of technology."
A spokesman said: "FIFA confirmed that goal-line technology will be on the agenda of the next annual business meeting."
Why is goal line technology next on the agenda? Do it now!
I don't think they need goal-line technology, but they should use video replays. The problems come when the audience at home (or sometimes the fans in the stadium when they make a mistake) are shown contentious decisions which are clearly wrong. There is no need to introduce a system that purports to present an accurate representation of whether the ball has crossed the line, as this will always have inherent flaws - just like Hawkeye. Obviously there will still be an element of doubt in some cases, and there should be a system for deciding these calls (i.e. give benefit to the attacking/defending team etc.). I don't think it is a matter of purporting to make 'accurate' decisions based on technology, just the need to remove the potential for those occasions where injustice is clearly done, a la Lampard v Germany.
I propose building a wall of platercine some 20 inches behind the goal line. That was the ball in its entirity must cross the line to make any sort of indentation into it. certain proof that the ball crossed the line.
this method has a major advantage. It requires no power to keep turned on and is therefore good the for the environment and reduces the carbon footprint of the premire league reserving more power for floodlights..
it will block the view (somewhat) of those behind the goal thus preventing terrorism at football matches.
failing that we could put a severly miopic person behind the goal who would only ever be able to see the ball if it has indeed crossed the line, again this helps reduce the envrionment impact of football, although this person could still be a terrorist , so this option is probably out.
or we could just do absolutely fuck all as in the grand scheme of things its doesnt really matter, coz the teams this generally happens to lose because they're shit and would have lost anyway..
So.....the answer to 3 people getting a decision wrong is to....increase the number to 5 !
One bloke with access to a monitor could solve the problem in an instant without even a pause in play. And if they are still in doubt then the default should just be to go with the ref's decision.
However, I do agree that platicine might be a better alternative. Is there a transparent version that would avoid obstructing the view?
