new arsenal anthem thinktank thread

Post by gooner.ed »

ok people - i am hoping this thread will run for 3 or 4 weeks (or longer if needs be) as people take time to think of a song that can be played over the PA in a similar fashion to YNWA. eventually, we'll take a vote and maybe get redaction to campaign to the club to give it a go next season. so the criteria are -

anthem has to be stirring (like 'You'll Never Walk Alone') - not too fast and not too poppy/lightweight. use your imaginations, and if need be come up with something a bit obscure. main thing is that it has the capability to be a good sing-a-long (unlike, say 'right here, right now' - which is exactly the opposite of what we are ooking for)

here's an off the wall one to get the ball rolling -

rod stewart's 'hangbags and gladrags' (used as the theme tune to the office) - kind of apt given arsenal's financial state! would make for a great singalong come the chorus. given the pathos of the tv show it's used for, i always find it quite a stirring tune, so it qualifies on that count.

more suggestions welcome, and i'll chip in with a few more myself when they occur to me.

Handbags is a good call.

Have always liked the Jerusalem idea.

How about a rewriting of Angels? Arsenal would fit nicely....i'm loving Arsenal instead, and through it all...etc, etc. Big Karoake hit, people know the words and the tune and if people were shown the rewritten version sure it would easily catch on round the ground. Not too cheesy.

I might go away and come up with a rewritten version.

Hasn't Roger Daltry got any good suggestions?

Appreciate the effort mate, I really do… but I think Angels would be a bit naff in terms of the tune. Its coming though, I can feel it

The Who - The Kids Are Alright

It's both a Daltry song and fits in with Arsenal.

Some people are missing the point the new anthem doesn"t have to mention Arsenal In fact it shouldn"t. YNWA doesn"t mention Liverpool at all,What we need is a great song which everyone can sing from beginning to the end not just one verse. And it must be unique.
As i said before my choice would be "The Wonder of You" by Elvis Presley the lyrics are not too difficult and it is a great singalong song.Get your Elvis cd"s out and have a listen.

What's wrong with 'Good Old Arsenal'??

Everyone knows it and has a lot of history with our club.

Dont know about singing Elvis and Tina Turner songs...what have they got to do with the club. Some people dont like Elvis and Tina Turner (well she was good when she was with Ike!)

Not sure about an 'entrance theme' but we could play 'Pretty Vacant' by the Sex Pistols just before the start of the second half for the free beer brigade in the corporate section or at the end of the game!

I've always liked 'Roll out the red carpet' although that's a cup final song obviously.

I'll chuck my hat in the ring with 'She bangs the drums' by The Stone Roses - simply because it's a quality tune and there are some passing references to what could be considered (loosely admittedly!) as footballing metaphors!

How about 'Bridge over troubled water'?
I know it mentions a bridge which could be a very slight reference to Chelski but it is the right sort of tempo and you don't have to be a pop idol to sing it. Its got lots of 'oohs' in it and although I don't know the lyrics too well I am sure there is a bit about 'I will follow you'. :o
Alternatively 'Streets of London'?

N13 Gooner what has "you"ll never walk alone" got to do with Liverpool? nothing. It"s a song from a musical. The point is we are looking for a song that doesnt have anything to do with the club. Who cares who sings it Elvis,Sinatra or The Stones as long as its a great song that lasts more than 30 secs. I bet some Liverpool fans said 45years ago why are we singing a song from a musical? it wont catch on.I was at Anfield for the 6-3 game and to see the Liverpool fans still sing it at the end was one of the most amazing things i have ever seen.Yes we can still sing Good old Arsenal but we are looking for an anthem. How can a club like West Ham have one and we dont. We are trying to create an atomosphere at Ashburton. What is wrong with trying?

Why does this song have to have nothing to do with the club??? lol

OK - YNWA is from a musical but its Liverpool fans are very attached to it obviously. Whats wrong with singing 'Good Old Arsenal'?? Its got a strong a link with the club and is part of the club's heritage. Do you think that when these fans pick up songs as anthems - they have a criteria that it MUST be a pop record and NOT have a link with the club? - NO...its just a popular song the fans enjoy singing...and Arsenal fans KNOW 'Good Old Arsenal'...well, its known more than songs by The Sex Pistols or The Stone Roses.

I dont know if it came across to your attention but not every Arsenal fan is a rockabilly! lol...they dont know these songs - especially the young fans from London!

I dont know, im a Public Enemy fan..can I ask that the crowd sings 'Dont Believe The Hype' because its got some distant link towards the club (the same distant link being put forward by other posters in this thread) because every northern team sings "Same Old Arsenal, Always Cheating" and we know we dont cheat as much as some as them lol.

How about singing the chorus of Curtis Mayfield's soul classic Move On Up when we're wining because we are moving up the league??!!!

Please stop trying to push your musical preference on other fans because it will only confuse the majority of these new age Arsenal fans who have just started going to the games even more and therefore wont sing. Keep it nice and simple.

Good Old Arsenal IS an anthem - its an Arsenal anthem and needs to be played before the game (as much as I enjoyed Pump Up The Jam yesterday) to bring back some Highbury atmosphere. It doesnt have to have been on TOTP or to be a song of some cult rock band not to be an anthem.

how about one of these:

Amazing Grace (The title is symbolic to our type of football, also a nice sing along song)

Beatles - Let it be

Bette Midler - Wind Beneath My Wings

Queen - Spread you wings

Police - Every breath you take

Oasis - Wonderwall

Like any of them?

Take the bait? There are sad people on this website that would LIKE to sing some of those songs.
