The quota thing really doesn't effect us mate, we have more than enough players to fill the "home-grown" quota.Rocky Number Seven wrote:I could see why we signed Silvestre at the time but what I dont understand is how we have let 4 CB's leave for free this summer who have all played in the Champions League and in World Cups. Can any team lose four players with that kind of experience?
Could this be something to do with the new quota rules for the premiership, perhaps we are looking to bring in a CB who came through an English teams youth ranks (Cahill/Jagielka) especially now Sol has gone as surely he would have qualified?

Correct. Infact we're are able to above the 25 squad quota as we have many under 21'sOnlyGotOneSong wrote:The quota thing really doesn't effect us mate, we have more than enough players to fill the "home-grown" quota.Rocky Number Seven wrote:I could see why we signed Silvestre at the time but what I dont understand is how we have let 4 CB's leave for free this summer who have all played in the Champions League and in World Cups. 1. He is/was shit.
2. Given a 2 year contract (although over 30)
3. Around this time, Everton signed Jagielka for just 4 million, and now we're linked with him for around 4 x's this amount.

I'm sorry, but could you enlighten me please, because I couldn't understand it myself, for the obvious reasons.

I didnt say I agreed I said I could see why we went for him. Senderos had just been shipped out on loan and this left us with only Toure Gallas and Djourou (when fit) at CB. Traore had been loaned out to Pompey and as this was before Gibbs had started to breakthrough left us with no cover at LB either. Add that to the fact two holding CM's had been sold/left for more cash we were in desperate need of defensive cover. To sign a 30year old CB with countless medals and international caps for a small fee when we had zero cash to spend was logical.franksav63 wrote:Really...Rocky Number Seven wrote:I could see why we signed Silvestre at the time but what I dont understand is how we have let 4 CB's leave for free this summer who have all played in the Champions League and in World Cups. I'm not defending him as I think we all know how uselss and past it he turned out to be but under the circumstances I can see why wenger went in for him.

I didn't mean to imply that you actually agreed with the Silvestre transfer, but how you could actually see why Wenger went for him, when there were better options around and available, but then again, it would have meant Wenger actually opening the purse strings, but we all know now, unfortunately, that 'free' is king with Wenger.Rocky Number Seven wrote:I didnt say I agreed I said I could see why we went for him. I think there are always better options about if we actually invested in the team.

I think this quote sums up almost everything wrong at Arsenal and how the youth system the manager himself acknowldges was a money saving tactic at best forced on him by the lack of cash that resulted form borrowing to re-develop Highbury, and how the Board's responses to save money and reduce investment in the club to re-pay that second loan created sheer havoc at Arsenal. The youth have almoost never been ready to come straight into the first team though several have with mostly disappointing and even disastrous results or they have been loaned out even as we get rid of key veterans every year without replacng them like-for-like or even replacing them at all in some cases.Rocky Number Seven wrote: I didnt say I agreed I said I could see why we went for him. And even now as it looks as though we have lost yet another veteran to the over-30 policy its recalled that the over-30 policy was not imposed on Silvestre - wonder if that had anything to do with his wages being smaller than any other player who was forced out under that policy? But the fact that Silvestre was given a two-year deal despite that policy's almost religious adherence the last five years in every oother instance shows it was purely a money-saving device. Another money-saving device foreced on the team by the Board over-borrowing and protecting against its own choices to pump the value of its own investment.

Look at the 5-year chart of our club's share price. Five years ago - the time the re-development loan was obtained as we were building the Emirates Stadium out share price was than 4200 a share. Now its over 10,000 a share.. Could that be why the Board won't spend any of that hundred million now to pay down the debt but won't invest it back in the team?. I'll remind you - Dan Fiszman never paid more then 2000 a share, neither did David Dein for what its worth. In fact really no one other than Stan Kroenke or Alisher Usmanov has bought a significant number of shares above that mark. And let's not forget the likes of Peter Hill-Wood the Carr Family and now Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith never paid a penny for the holdings they have sold or intend to sell.
Shameful really given the disastrous impact such naked greed and profiteering has had on the football team these man and women purportedly love like we do.

one more thing
i will repeat it cos i dont believe it myself sometimes...in terms of support, stadium, history everthing we are the biggest club in london and in the top ten in europe....why are we so ffing tight on spending money on this team? remember before we moved it was all about how we would be battling the big guns in the premiership and be able to compete financially. 5 years on just how much of a lie does that sound.
