Best sports books/biographies

for me of the obvious gooner ones, TA's is good, as is the great divide, and perry groves is ok. spunkys i found boring.

away from football the best sports book ive ever read is 'a lot of hard yakka' by Simon hughes. if you have any interest in english cricket its a must read...i dont like him as a commentator but hes a quality writer/diariyst

"Me, The Money, The Misses" by a certain Emmanuel Adebayor will be an hilarious read in a few years!

radford suggest the following football ones.....

all played out - (one of the greatest football books ever written)

fever pitch - (obviously)

the ball is round - (superb)

barca - (history of said barcelona)

white storm - history of real madrid

The Miracle of Castel di Sangro - (an american in italy)

once upon a time in naples - (the real story of marradona in italy)

Three excellent books.

"The End" by Tom Watt. People's history of The North Bank Highbury.

"Muhammad Ali" by Thomas Hauser. Biography.

"War, Baby" by Kevin Mitchell. Story of the Benn vs McLellan fight.

The autobiographies of Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank and Michael Watson are all very good boxing books too.

Niall Quinns book isnt a bad read. "I Crossed The Line" by Liam Dunne (Wexford hurler) is pretty good too.

Worst biography of all time must be Frank Stapletons. Comes across as a very bitter man.

Agreed Quartz,thought that was an excellent read,glad to see Benn has recently(ish) been to see McLellan,,dont think Benn came over to well in the book.

Not read alot of autobiographies, but I've read Geoff Boycotts, that was quite good, also Alan Ball's is good especially when he talks about one of Terry Neill's team talks, when Neill brings out toy cowboy and indian's to get a point across (about circling the opposition (cowboys)) with us being the indians)...... with Steve Burtenshaw (the coach at the time) couldn't keep a straight face, typical Neill this..

Two standout reads for me,

Jimmy White's autobiography was good, the guy has lived a hell of a life.

But the best has to be the auto by WWE wrestling legend Mick Foley. Simply excellent.
