As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

General Custer.
That explains it
I just don't get it, though. Football is a pretty simple game, based around attack and defence, and both disciplines are equally important, so why why why would a top manager (being paid £millions) for a top, top club (who aim to be the best in Europe) neglect the defensive side of the game??
It makes no sense.
Surely you do everything in your power to maximise your chances of success. And if your main talents as a coach are attacking, then you bring in a world class team of defensive coaches! - it's common fucking sense!!!
This isn't about money, because coaching staff are cheap as chips compared to even your most retarded level of Premier League player, so there's no excuse. They NEED coaching!!!!
Hey I’m in total agreement, I’ve bemoaned the eact same issues on here several times. If it was a choice between another CB coming in or Bould/Keown/any-other-half-decent defensive coach coming in I’d honestly probably go for the latter right now.

I believe Boro Primorac does most of the defensive work. No chance of him being replaced until Wenger goes, as they've worked their whole coaching career together. Our defence was noticably better when Keown was working alongside the squad in the 2006 CL run.
I'm sure one of our ex-players (Dixon, Winterburn?) said we never run defensive drills on the squad, and training was all based on fitness, ball control, quick passing etc. Compare that with Graham who had the back four roped together to perfect their offside trap - they also had a very much a "when in doubt, get it out" ethos.

I also remember reading somewhere that Keown had trouble getting players to listen to instruction and saying they were too mollycoddled by AW - i think it was in regards to Senderos. Shocking if its true.
Wozza said earlier we could excuse some of the defending on the experienced midfielders Cesc & Song being absent. Well that just sums it all up! Cesc is 22, Song is 21. They aren't exprienced in the grand scheme of things. And as far as i can see getting rid of Sol and Gallas and even Eduardo has just lowered the experience further. These players need guidance, not to be the ones guiding.
I'm pretty sure the only player we now have over 27 is Almunia
You're correct BT. I remember that Senderos story as well.
And although I can't find the actual quote, I remember Wenger all but guaranteeing towards the end of last season that the signings he would be making this summer would be experienced ones 'because we already have enough young players'!! Who have we ended up with? A young and still unproven striker, and another twenty something year old with one season in the French Second division!!

Yep, I remember that, too. We'd be signing EXPERIENCE apparently....
Out - Gallas, Silvestre, Campbell, Eduardo, Senderos.
In - Chamakh, Koscielny.
That's a lot of experience going out, and hardly any coming in...
when we fall out of the champions league at the quarter final stage and go out of the fa cup up north while finishing 3/4th next season he will say the same thing.
he will never change,he's just a liar and a spin doctor, only here for himself now.
But it's been this way for a while now, I don't expect anything from us going into a new season anymore I just rest of blind optimism that we might scrape a decent cup run and win a bit of silverware.. But with Wengers padlocked chequebook and calamity keepers I can't see any trophy and scraping into the top four.. Yay
Still the good news is that Wenger looks like he's gonna sign a new 4 year contract with us to the delight of the board so we'll top the profit table whilst slipping down the PL table!

I'm looking forward to meeting up with my mates for pre and post match beers but not the bit in the middle where I sit and watch our keepers and what calls itself our defence. A majority of the fans are happy with 4th and that's exactly what we'll get.
Nervous of what?? a friendly in Poland??? that makes no sense. We have a competitive game at Anfield next week... if a friendly in Warsaw gets them nervous, how can they be expected to cope at Anfield??
I know he's just lying through his teeth to protect his players, but it's still depressing.
Oh, and a great summary it was, too.... not even so much as a mention of Fabianski, or the calamitous defending. Yet room for a question and answer on Cesc, who wasn't even there!!
"You have to be detached from the result" - erm, NO! you need to realise this defence is a shambles and sort it out!! - 78 league goals conceded in 76 games is atrocious - please bring in a defensive coach who can mould them into a unit before another season is lost to countless defensive errors (ps - sign a 'keeper. Thanks. )
Wenger added: "The situation is that we have the goalkeepers we have. Fabianski conceded three goals in the first half and you could not especially say that he could do something about it."

Bloody hell, even the media are now picking up on the fact that we're a catastrophe at the back. It must be serious!
Hopefully this outdated concept of us playing "beautiful football that's a joy to watch" can be put to bed once and for all.
Until we actually start playing it again, obviously.
Edit: I raised my eyebrows at this AW quote too: "Kieran Gibbs is slowly coming back to his best". If his best is bringing the ball down in his six-yard box for strikers to knock it in, then yes, I'd agree.
