Fcuking typical
Given his policy of refusing to keep players against their will in the past then it is very possible that any or all of bert, mad jens & diarra will be leaving in jan and unless wenger receives a call from apu in the quickie mart then we wont be signing anybody
If this pans out to be the case then I am embarrassed - if he needs to sign players then surely he would sign them especially given that he has a decent kitty at his disposal but no, not alone does he rule out signings but he also states that he would only buy a bargain basement player and to me that paints us as a cheapskate club
If he would be willing to sign such a player does it not indicate that wenger isnt 100% satisfied with the size/quality/balance of the squad ? Top clubs do not go around talking about signing players on the cheap and it is yet another example of how we are nowhere near being classed as one of europes elite. If wenger wants to deal in 1970's prices may I suggest that he goes back and buys jennings, mclintock & charlie george cos even now they would add more quality than exists in some places

Its bad if our plans on whether to strengthen the squad depends on the availability of song
Lets hear the "arsene knows" brigade explain that one
Perhaps we could get gus to have a word with his good friend perry in that hope that perry knows someone in the cameroon fa that will ensure alex gets a late call up
Shocking to say that a player that isnt classed as one of the best 22 players that cameroon(who are hardly one of football's superpowers) has and yet is classed by le boss as an important squad man for one of europes biggest clubs
I was one of the fans who at the start of the season predicted a season of woe but after the good start we made I was delighted by the fact that I was being proved wrong. Now however we appear to be on a road that can only bring us backwards not forwards but at least our bank balance and club accounts still look great

augie i have to say i do admire your truthful and straight-to-the-point posts you make, but i have to disagree with you here. I, like you, didnt hold much hope for this year, praying we would hold onto 4th place if we were lucky. However we have proved evone wrong this season, and i think thats more to do with our new found freedom and ability for several people to score goals than anything else. this 4-5-1 we play tho isnt good for the team: we fail to provide chances and give adebayor far too much to do upfront on his own - when in a 4-4-2 we create a hell of a lot more than playing 4-5-1 but i guess wneger doesnt think bendtner nor eduardo are ready yet.augie wrote: I was one of the fans who at the start of the season predicted a season of woe but after the good start we made I was delighted by the fact that I was being proved wrong. however, to suggest that our title challenge is over after a credible draw away at pompey is a little far fetched for me. WE are only a point behind and considering the amount of away games and injuries we have had, we have done reasonably well. You may be right, we may not recover and have to settle for 2nd or 3rd but to start predicting the demise of our club because of not spending in january and the apparent lack in depth is a little too pessimistic for me. We are still very much in the title race, the first time in a long few seasons but we should trust mr wenger, he has proved us wrong in the past, and i still beleive we can win the title, albeit i think manure are the team to beat.
Todays game is going to be a test of character, and im sure if we fail to win there will plenty of posts or threads suggesting that our premier league season is over, and everton are a very good team. But we arent the side we were last seaosn, and when im up there today watching our boys im going to be cheering them on, hoping that we can still prove our harshest critics - our own fans (myself included) to a premier league title once more.
i see where your coming from but with the start we have had do you not feel that now is the time to push forward, tonysaunders wrote:You're not wrong, Reb. My prediction is, and has been for a month or so now is that we'll finish third. I hope to God I'm wrong, but I cannot ignore what is in front of me.rebel gooner wrote:well the fight for second place starts now[/b]
is wenger happy to finish third this season

if so then why

we have a chance to challenge this year which compared to last two seasons is a nice change but wenger has to see where we need replacements and go and get them if possible, sometimes its like going back to grahams era when he wouldnt spend on the title winning teams, wenger has the same attitude and sometimes i wonder is it his money he wont spend or the fans who are forced to pay £30 just for the right to buy a ticket and the guys who pay up to £100 to view a game,,
we have a chance and we should take it,
please god i hope im wrong

Guys, Let's wait and see what Mr. Wenger does in January before we make any snap judgments. Sure we may lose Diarra, Jens and Bert, but they haven't left yet. And I'm sure Mr. Wenger, will surprise us with his buys. Remember Sagna was "bargain basement"!!
Don't be so pessimistic, we are still in the fight for first place!!

Tom I havent written off our title hopes and my negativity isnt based solely on the pompey game but rather a run of games which incs toon, boro & even spuds game which we were very lucky to win.
You say you still believe that we can win the title but I am asking you do you still believe that this current squad, without any additions, can win the title ? If so you are clearly in the minority. As I stated earlier the fact that we have a chance to win the title this season is more than I expected but when we have a chance we have to do what is required to take that chance especially considering that for the last 2 seasons we have been nowhere near a challenge. The fact is that next season, despite the improvement we have made, we not be in a position to challenge(cesc might be gone along with others, our rivals will have strengthened etc) and we may well rue the lost opportunity this season.
Everton away is a really really tough game and I am in no way saying that our season will make our break based on this result. However we need to start turning a corner but in terms of performances and results if the confidence is to return so that we can make a challenge. Apart from the obvious need to strengthen the team & squad I believe that new signings would help the players regain their focus and in turn push them to up their game once again but wenger clearly disagrees. The boss may have worked wonders for us and we are all grateful for that but the fact is that his management skills in terms of tactics, team selections and assesment of the needs of strengthening leave a lot to be required of late and his acheivements should not be allowed to mask that
