It sounds like he has actually personally spoken to Given and he mentions that 'Given on his way to Arsenal Football Club'. Warren Barton is also a keen Arsenal supporter so maybe he knows something that we dont...please please let this come true!...I know we have said that City wont sell but perhaps Given has spoken to the club, and has asked to move to us (even with a permanant deal) due to us having the lure of Champions League Football.

I see Liverpool splashed out £2.3 million for Brad Jones. Not someone I would want, but it does seem galling that a club who are on the verge of insolvency will spend more on a reserve Goalkeeper than we are likely to on our 1st choice.

Speaks volumes for me

Barton said that Given might be on his way, and Arsenal need a keeper.

Hold the back pages....

He only said "Given may leave.....could be to Arsenal Football Club". Then some prick on twitter makes out as though he said it was a done deal. Classic 2+2=5 job.

We're signing Schwarzer and that's it.

I am more worried about a CB coming in than a keeper if Koscielny had a broken leg from Cole we would be down to 1 CB and that is worrying .

Story isn't up yet, currently going across the newsticker on the sport page.

*UPDATE*

They've added it to the Milner story

Manchester City close in on midfielder James Milner

Manchester City hope to complete the signing of Aston Villa midfielder James Milner within the next 24 hours.
No fee has been agreed for the 24-year-old England player but it is believed a deal is close to being completed and he is set to have a medical on Wednesday.
City boss Roberto Mancini said his midfielder Stephen Ireland is likely to go to Villa as part of the transfer.
Mancini added that he would like keeper Shay Given to stay but will let the 34-year-old leave if he wants to.
More to follow.

Oh ok. I had lost hope of Given but it's just been reignited.

The problem is how far has the Scwarzer deal gone? If we're near singing then I can't see us taking a risk by going after Given.

We bid in May, got rejected, we havent gone back in according to Hughes. Schwarzer has then handed in a transfer request, obvioulsy to get us to make an improved offer but you have to wonder if Wenger was waiting for this to happen at City or has he just got lucky?

For me, Given is a better 'keeper and a better option, considering his age. He's got a few years left and by then, Chesney would be more than ready to take over. Almunia could play second fiddle if he wanted to, if not he can go elsewhere.

I hate it when news like this breaks, I get a bit giddy and take it too far ^^

Ha I know. How much does everyone reckon we'ld have to bid for Given? I'ld reckon it would hv to be around 12 million

It doesnt appear that we were very far at all, certainly not far enough to back out of. Last I ehard we hadnt contacted Fulham since May, so seemed to have given up on it.

As for Given, City couldnt have kept him because he will want to leave, but I wouldnt get too excited. The real problem is that they wont let him come to us.
