USMartin wrote:The problem is is not that Song is not a good enough central defender when needed, but it exposes another weakness - the lack of a proper defensive central mid-fielder other than Song - and if Song doesn't perform sufficiemtly at the back in theory it has exposed our weakness in two critical defensive positions that both need strengthening.
I don't think anyone disputes the need for a solid CB and a tough tackling CM !! But I do believe that if we solve the CB problem Song can be covered in CM by Diaby or Denilson for some games if required!! Its not ideal but I would prioritse the need for a CB and a GK!!
In an ideal world I would love to see us get a battering ram of a CF - maybe Fabiano? Plus the others mentioned but I fear we will have to be content with the first two if we are lucky!!
I do not.
Neither is good enough, and I do not consider Diaby a defensive midfielder, merely a physically strong one.
tomas rosicky was absolutely outstanding today. played in the cesc role and contributed as much as cesc would've, maybe more. funny how we have only 3 centrebacks but also 4 players capable of playing cesc's role perfectly (cesc, nasri, rosicky and ramsey).
great performance, should've been 8 or 9 if chamakh could finish with his feet as well as with his head.
if we keep our pressing like today and like the start of last season, i'm sure we will conceed far less goals than last season. sagna ran his socks off today.
Chamakh: Put in a real shift and looked very sharp. Ok, missed a couple of sitters, put that down to nerves, but with his work-rate and movement, he will score goals this season. Looks like the real deal.
Rosicky: Pulled the strings, absolutely storming.
Those two with Walcott looked terrifying in the first half. Against Blackpool...
Is Ian Holloway an idiot or what? He's saying the sending off was ridiculous but was a penalty at best...if he actually pulled his head out of his ass, surely he would know a last man tackle is a straight red and if watching replays actually show they were hard done by with the penalty decision cos it was just outside the area...
