I know some Gooners had left - my best mate just felt it had gotten too well-known and too many non-football supporters came in just fior the experience and atmosphere - sort of like that Frazier ep where he takes over Daphne's pub....oh dear -gusher311 wrote:The NY Gooners now go to The Blind Pig. It'll be the same people that were at Nevada Smith's. I'd say give the Blind Pig a shout
the place we went - only wnet down a couple of times there were only about half-dozen of us plus the bar staff watching. Just as well as Chelsea and United were the matches....

Went six months after 9/11 to show solidarity etc. came across ignorant locals. Stayed in the Wellington on 7th Avenue. Stayed four nights, did the usual tourist things and then ventured out on our exploring the back streets etc.QuartzGooner wrote:Agree with ****, I like NYC.mrgnu1958 wrote:DONT agree Reg"y..NYC is the Dogs Bollocks imoReg Niseth wrote:Went to Nevada's back in '02, 7am drinking stella, nice. Once you've ESB day and night, the SoL and ridden the Staten Island Ferry and stood in Times Square there's not a lot left to do. When visiting stores like tiffany's and Macy's is a recommendation of things to do then you know there's something wrong.
A bit like Chelsea - no history, no substance and all show full of ignorant pricks.
+1 when you arrived, it seemsReg Niseth wrote:no history, no substance and all show full of ignorant pricks.

New York, like London and other major cities, is what you make of it. There's plenty to do, but obviously it all depends on what your interests are.
As for the people - I've met plenty of friendly folk, and ignorant pricks, in London and NY, and on the whole I found NY'ers are more friendly and open with tourists, then Londoners are. Just my observation, though.

We arrived at JFK late at night. I'd pre-booked a stretch limo to take us to the hotel. It was our 20th Wedding anniversary. all I had to do was dial the number provided and a car would be with me within five minutes.g88ner wrote:+1 when you arrived, it seemsReg Niseth wrote:no history, no substance and all show full of ignorant pricks.![]()

Well the public phones did not recognise the FREEPHONE number I had, so I politely asked at the help desk if someone could dial the FREEPHONE number for me. I was told no, they couldn't help. So I asked if maybe I ws using the phone incorrectly i.e. dial number then add money on answering (even though it was freephone) or put in money and then deail number. He just shrugged his shoulders. I went back and tried several more time . . no joy. so back to the help desk and asked again pointing out it'd been a long day, it was very late (we were now the only two people left in the arrivals lounge). still he won't help and will not explain why not.
So I got a little annoyed and told him he was a spineless *word censored* that was not worthy of our support as he didin't have the bottle to visit London when we were bombed etc.
Two customs offices appeared and offered to help. within two minutes we were on our way.
Forward one hour and we've checked in and sharing a lift with two fat fucks from Idaho asking if we're Oirish.
Dump bags and find a local bar for a nightcap. Span v Mancs is showing from preevious weekend. They don't know the score. I ask the barman who was from dublin if he knew how we'd got on (we were away to Juve in the CL, last group game, they score was not good for us and we went out). When I showed disappointmeny paddy started to slag me off for being Arsenal and calling Wenger all sorts of names which i don't need to repeat. so fuck 'em, I looked him in the eye as I finished my drink, looked at the screen and told him the final score much to the disappointment of the irish manc fans in there. New Yorkers? fuck 'em
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience in New York because its a great place, but to be fair a lot of it by your own words seems less about New York itself than would justify your feeling Reg, and in fact a lot of things in any city would have bothered you the same way. I was expecting when you decided to explain your feelings a bit more unpleasant story than that.
I also would have expected your problems to be confined to dealing with New Yorkers. Obviously you had some difficulties at JFK and were understandably peturbed by the people involved (though your reaction wasn't the best either) and their inconsideration of your circumstances. But you also clearly were annoyed by other travellers at least once, and fellows from own your side of the pond over here.
I'm not so sure that New York really was the problem - though there are times it can be
. You should try it again sometime.

Sorry you had a bad trip Reg.
I have been a few times, seen the main sights and then found a lot more to do, so much that I need to go back to see more thing I did not get a chance to.
Highlights included Tenement Museum, Ellis Island, Whitney Museum, Hip Hop tour of Harlem and the Bronx, going to a Jazz Lounge in Williamsburg, going to a gig on Long Island, good restaurants, getting smashed at the House of Brews, and some seriously hot Mamis
.
I also booked a limo..had a problem getting through on phone too! But after a couple of calls found the driver and was fine.
Main problem there was people not understanding my accent but learned in such situations to communicate by having a laugh and slightly imitating theirs (i.e. "fifty" becomes "fiddy", PATH train becomes "Path as in Math" rather than than "Parth").

It's funny that a good or bad experience can forever more leave you with an impression of the place. Went to Athens - just for the day as we were flying off to the islands - and one guy was particularly helpful. I always have in mind now what a nice place Athens was....but we were only there for the day FFS!
New York? Went before, in the early 1980's. Loved it. First and only time a bar maid has asked me out on a date - to see Sisters of Mercy at a club (Danceteria?). Got hammered on many occasions and great that New Yorkers are just like us and not like the US tourists you see in London.
Still undecided on where to watch the Blackburn game, but thanks for the advice.
