new arsenal anthem thinktank thread

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

the idea is for everyone to chip in with ideas and then we can all discuss their relative merits. and i have to say i am delighted that everyone at least seems to want to give this a crack by coming up with suggestions. opinions on others' suggestions are fine, but no slating off required in this particular thread as we are trying to encorage ideas and get people to come forward if they have any.

i think it should be considered how likely an 'anthem' is to really stir the soul and make you quiver with the sheer emotion of the song. and i am not lating any suggestions, but my opinion of something like 'one step beyond' is that it is too fast and poppy to have the desired affect. i'd be inclined to favour a much slower song. 'london calling' also seems a bit on the fast side to me. i'll dig out the del shannon thing through the old filesharing route early next week. shouldn't even be here now as i'm up against it trying to get the last gooner of the season to press :(

I reckon Wonderwall as you can easy changed the words wonderwall with Arsenal and I think its quite apt!

oasis said the song is wrote about the wall where they wrote all dreams

How many of us dream off playing for the Arsenal for just 5 minutes.
I also dream of playing for the scum scoring 6 own goals in every game i play but it means my flesh would be scared with that crap shirt so its more of a nightmare not a dream.

singup4theArse wrote:All good suggestions so far. I'm not going to add to the ideas already hear but if you want to get an anthem going you have to find the kind of song thats old enough for everyone to identify with - so out go all the hits of the last decade . Blue moon/YNWA/keep right on/dehlila/bubbles all have things in common. They are old songs. They've stood the test of time; they are slightly absurd and naff in their own way and I suspect thats what's made them 'catchy' and later, popular with fans. Having said that the song also has to have broad appeal I can't see the average cypriot/black/Irish/Asian kid singing 'knees up mother brown' .

'Swing Low' may be an old slave song, but English rugby fans have adopted it as their own. While I don't mind 'Good Old Arsenal', it just does'nt 'sing' like an anthem should. Pity that 'Bejesus said Paddy' is'nt sung much now.
Knees up mother brown is a classic my old man told me that in the old days it was sung with everyone jumping up and down. I'm young and am very vocal i'd sing it and so will other young people. If you've ever been in the FE you'd see that the JG's 12+ are always singing songs and are sometimes the only ones singing in the FE and yes not all sing but most do and also most sing whatever comes round no matter the context. As for Good Old Arsenal that is a classic and don't let anyone tell you differently..should be sung for long periods of time like Arsene Wenger's red and white army at away matches. And B'Jesus said Paddy another classic which should be brought back another song that my old man says use to be sung for whole halfs..Oh and lastly i still think we should use "and we'll drink, drink together in the praise of the AFC" as the anthem because one it's original and two it epitomises every thing about being a hardcore gooner.

P.s. Do you mind me making this thread on a different forum so other Gooners from other sites can contribute to an idea or agree with one already mentioned?

i've no problems with this thread going on at the same time in other chatrooms. the more the merrier. main thing is to discuss the possibilities and reach some kind of a consensus. then we can whittle it down to maybe 5 or 6 ones that would work well and then have a big vote on them - arsenal fans coming to a decision is more likely to have the result required than anything the club foist upon us. so the more people get involved in the debate the more likely the club are to actually give it a try. so by all means discuss elsewhere, but do bring the best suggestions for anthems that result back here. ta.

so remember - not too fast or poppy, with words that are capable of making you feel emotional when you hear them sung by 60,000 voices. lyrics have to be fairly audible so people will pick up the song easy. does not have to be associated with arsenal - the one that we come up with at the end of all this will become that if this works. i'll compile a list of the contenders so far in the middle of next week, but let's keep thinking about tunes at least until the season ends as i am sure there are some good ones which just haven't occured to anyone yet.

and remember, this is going to take time if the club agree to it. played before every home match at the appropriate moment. let's be honest, at first, not many people are going to sing it, but if it is played as a matter of habit, i believe it will start to be picked up and there will come a big game when it suddenly takes off and everyone is singing it. then we've hit paydirt. i really think there is a chance we can achieve something here, so that's why i am happy for it to be debated all over, and not just here.

Highbury Highs by Roger Daltrey - The Shortened Version as singing all of it would take forever...
Ive seen children grow on this field of green, on this field on dreams, the years have passed away.

I've stood side by side with Londons pride,
we've laughed and cried, we've lived another day.

CHORUS:
To those highbury highs under north london skies
Oh yes! We will remember those Highbury Highs
And those Highbury days and those Highbury ways,
Oh Yes! We will remember those Highbury highs.

May your highbury highs be with you all your days.
May those highbury highs last forever.
Theres one thing for certain, when they drop this final curtain
Some you can bet your shirt on, the Arsenal's here to stay!

CHORUS

Will the best song be give to redaction or is it something the fans are sorting out independantly?

The Impossible Dream:

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go

To right the unrightable wrong
(1)To be better far than you are(1)
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest, to follow that star
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
(2)To be willing to give when there's no more to give (2)
(3)To be willing to die so that honor and justice may live
(3)
And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I'm laid to my
rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star

NOT Wonderwall. Its too poppy, and the wanker gallagher bros would come out staright away and rip us to shreds for using it which would not make anyone want to sing!

I like the impossible dream now after reading the lyrics... I also like my suggestion of Maybe Its Because I'm a Londoner x

i'm starting this up by way of a greater campaign we will be running on the website and in the gooner over the summer and into next season to improve the atmosphere at home games. but we do co-operate with redaction and am sure we will work with them as we have the same goals. but the vote for the anthem once we whittle it down to a shortlist will probably take place on the onlinegooner referendum page. once tthe vote is in, we will approach the club, probably in tandem with redaction. but we want everyone in the stadium singing along - not just the redsection!

Maybe 'God save the Queen' now she is apparently confirmed as a gooner...we know the words and it now has an arsenal link without mentioning the team directly.

Can see it taking off...they'll be using it before England matches it's so good!
