A shopping list for Arsene (13/4)

Post by gooner.ed »

usual thread starter... remember when liverpool bought aldridge, houghton, beardsley and barnes over the course of six months. from the team that won the double in 1986 they rebuilt and almost repeated the feat with fresh faces. arsenal have fresh faces alright, but too much potential and not enough proven talent. so let's see that addressed in the summer with 3 proven players coming in. last summer only gallas could be described as this, although some might argue rosicky. maybe we should think about buying from other english teams

The last time Arsene really went out and bought players was about 6 years ago with Campbell, Jeffers and Van Bronckhurst. You could argue that he did the same last year with Adebayor, Diaby and Walcott but these were not known players, all youngsters who still have something to prove. I'd love to see Arsene go out and splash the cash on some proven players but I honestly can't see it. I think we're going to have to get used to fighting for the mickey mouse UEFA cup for a few years to come while Arsene is in charge. The only thing that might change this is if(when) a takeover does happen and the new owners get tired of Arsene's stubborness.

Klose of Werder Bremen is a real fox in the box.He does nothing else but score goals. And with the amount of chances we create he could score 20 plus goals for us. I think we could get him for maybe £10-£12 million. We cannot have another situation like this year if either Henry or RVP gets injured and have no back up.

I like the idea of Klose...

But I think this time next season we can win the league... But even if we don't win it we'll at least still be in the hunt, in with a chance with Chelsea and Manu at this stage of the season in 2008.

We'll have experience next season even without a signing. Rosicky will get double figures, and Fabregas will start scoring. And he can be rested more often as Denilson and Diaby will play much more of a part.
Henry and van Persie will be like new signings.
Bedneter will be coming back and will score more than Aliadiere and 'The Beast' put together. Adebeyor will up his tally to at least 10 as well.
The defence will start the season fresh and together and learn and build together to become a strong unit - and they'll have better protection from midfield when Diaby's playing.

But we need a replacement for Freddie cos his best years are behind him (he misses the Dennis and Pires passes) and it certainly ain't Hleb.

If I could pick one super quality player that would really add something to this team then it would have to be a creative (sets up actual goals) and goal scoring wide man - preferably who can play on both sides.
The Ribery rumours have been around for a while... Not quite super quality but he's good enough to be able to make a difference and really push home that final bit for us to lift the big one. And, to be honest, he's the most likely isn't he... Or that chap at Sporting (nana or something, who's being touted as a mini (Christiano) Ronaldo of some kind)
Who would you sign for us?

Buying players

Post by eitherormore »

Whilst we all love a good old gossip about who and how much pre-season, there doesn't seem to be a huge precedence in Wenger buying big in the Summer, not unless someone big leaves. And whilst I completely agree with the 2004 to 2007 analysis, one other thing has changed: the desires of Mr. Wenger.

Don't get me wrong, I am not asking for his head. I just wonder: what is his motivation? Is it winning, or is it developing young players. We all swoon in disbelief at the brilliance of Fabregas and Denilson's passing and ball retention, but Premiership grit and determination? Vieira they ain't. And so why form such a lightweight midfield partnership? Surely Wenger knew that Liverpool's strength in the middle, for example, would dominate such a partnership. I often think that he plays those players for experience first, and to win second.

However, when analysing the youth of our team, we can look to the reduction in player wages as a huge factor; how much would Pires have demanded compared to Rosicky, or Eboue compared to Lauren? How big a factor has financial considerations been upon Wenger's team selection? Chelski have clearly inflated the market, and prices are not realistic as such.

So, in an attempt to cheer myself up post-West Ham, I pulled out Invincible season on DVD. What magnificence from Pires, Bergkamp, Campbell, Vieira...and dare I say it, Ashley Cole!!! And when there wasn't magnificence, there was resolve and determination. And teams feared us, something that just doesn't happen any more. So maybe it is simple; maybe we've just never quite replaced those great players that moved on. But you just have to ask why.

I will be very happy if Arsenal buy Huntelaar, Ribery, Akinfeev and Bale. But I know they buy 2 superstars at the most. I think this season, Arsenal have many problems.

eitherormore I think you are wrong about teams not fearing us anymore...I think they actually fear us more now than ever before, remember Man U were playing 4-5-1 against us at the Emirates and Old Traford, granted thier 4-5-1 can quickly switch to 4-3-3 also look at the points we droped this season and matches lost in the champlions league and other cups. We lost those matches not because teams didn't fear up but exactly because they did. Blackburn FA cup sat back and defended and caught us on the break with a sucker punch, same with PSV; hence why the games we've lost were typically by 1-0 from an early goal or late goal.

Yes we did have problems this season but only because we couldn't score for whatever reason...which is why I personally feel Arsene should get 2 proven goal scorers. Our problem has not been in defense its been upfront where we needed the movement and composure to open up defenses and finish. How many matches have you seen us play this season where we have countless chances but don't finish. And remember we are regarded as the best team in Europe at tiring defences apart, yet we just don't finish...
