As usual, this should be a good game up at the SoL. We tend to be outclassed at Arsenal, but the home games tend to be close and can go either way. We are confident at home at the minute, especially after the Man City game, but at this early stage I think Arsenal are showing more of the steel which is required to win the league.

Obviously Fabregas is the main one for us to contend with, but with Arshavin and Nasri around, and the more physical threat of Chamakh, I think we will have our hands full. Cattermole is a loss, but he is also a liability. the main problem with his absence is that we would normally want to go 4-5-1 against Arsenal, but this will now mean a central midfield of Henderson, Riveros and Malbranque. All are good players, but both Henderson and Malbranque are much more effective on the wing, and I fear that there isnt enough strength there- if we try to match the Arsenal midfield in a footballing contest we will lose and, unfortunately, I dont see how we can play any other way- we simply dont have the cloggers in midfield with Catts suspended

Defensively, Turner isn't back yet and that is a loss and, as usual Mensah has a knock. When fit, Mensah is the best defender I have seen at SAFC since Bould, but the lad just cant stay fit, which is a pain in the arse. We might have to go with Ferdinand and Bramble and, whilst both have had good seasons, both are prone to lapses in concentration which, against a side as incisive as Arsenal, could be fatal. Add to this the fact that Craig Gordon still wont be back and we have an inexperienced keeper in goal. To be fair to Mignolet, his main weakness is dealing with crosses and Arsenal dont put in many of them so fingers crossed he will be okay

Basically, it is two teams who are understrength due to injury. Unfortunately for us, despite the fact that we now have better strength in depth than many clubs in the league (well, than many bottom half sides), we will still suffer more from absences than the Arsenal

I would predict a 2-1 to the Arsenal, but you never know, could go either way

As mentioned previously, there arent any home only pubs in Sunderland, so I hope all those who are going (despite the arseholes at ESPN moving the game when travel back is difficult and accommodation is almost impossible to find due to the great north run) get out and about, enjoy a good few drinks and have a cracking day out (hopefully with the exception of the result!). Normally a good atmosphere around town when the Gooners come up, the sets of fans seem to get on well, so it should be a very enjoyable day

As with last seasons games, I'll come on afterwards and give my unbiased opinion on the Arsenal side after the game. As usual, if I'm not on straight on after the match and we have lost, dont think i'm hiding or owt- its just that we're going straight out on the piss after the game and so i probably wont get online until Sunday evening :barscarf: If I remember I'll also try and get some pictures of the Arsenal support from the Sunderland end since i know some people on here like seeing them

Enjoy the game lads, ha'way Sunderland

you really know the right buttons to push on here eh?

regarding crosses, things have changed this year, chamakh throws himself at everything in the box and with him keen to impress away from home (i hope at least) i would expect the fullbacks to knock a good few crosses in than people are used to seeing. he adds that dimension the front line has lacked since bus-trip-boy strutted up the M6, only with added commitment/mentalness. should be a cracking game.

in germany some clubs have an almost alliance system of friendships with other clubs, if fan groups were more organized i reckon the only side i would consider being on good terms with is sunderland... how about it?

 aye, Bouldy is a bit of a legend on both sides! To be fair, since I have been watching SAFC our defenders have largely been utter shite (Steve Caldwell, Gary Breen, Phil Babb, Nyron Nosworthy etc), so Bouldy being top of the list isnt too hard, but Mensah is a genuine class act- would definitely be at a top 4 club if he wasnt always out injured. With regards to the crossing, I have noticed a few more crosses coming in from the Arsenal now that Chamakh is up front, but at least Mignolet can guarantee it wont be constant crossing like we get when we play a lot of the sides (stoke, bolton, fulham etc). Be interesting to see how Arsenal play it tbh, but i think with our central midfield looking lightweight, most of the moves will come through the middle

Aye, like I say, the fans seem to get on well- partly I think it is to do with both having horrible, deluded neighbours to contend with, but also we have played a couple of times recently on the last couple of weeks of the season, where the fans tend to get on fairly well, and we had the standing ovation for Henry etc, certainly one of the trips that people look forward to. We seem to get on with Arsenal and West Brom best in the league- dont mind Villa fans either tbh, when we go away to these 3 we tend to have good craic with the opposition fans. The worst lot are the mags (obviously), spurs (horrible place to go away), birmingham city and stoke. when Arsenal come up there are normally a good few gooners going into the pubs/ perving on our strippers etc, and it tends to be a good laugh. It also helps that we are almost always competing at opposite ends of the table

Henderson seems a very good player, very promising.

he is, particularly when played out wide since the game sometimes passes him by when he's played centrally. Not the quickest, but can beat a man and is a good passer and crosser of a ball, as he showed with the assist against Wigan last weekend. Bruce has already mentioned that it might be hard to hang onto him as there are "very big clubs" sniffing around. Luckily he's only young, is a local lad, a Sunderland fan and we are doing fairly well, so I think he will know that he is best to spend another 2 or 3 years with us getting regular games. He's also a very level headed lad, no ego whatsoever, and his family ensure he keeps his feet on the ground. I think in the next two years he will make his england debut and will probably move on, as long as he continues to work hard on his game

i know he's a *word censored* but thought i would post Mark Wanker Lawrenson's prediction to see what ppl think
Sunderland v Arsenal

Arsenal are in extremely good form and they seem to have got over the loss of Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott, but I think that will catch up with them sooner or later.

Sunderland have been a bit of Jekyll and Hyde side so far this season but they did well to get a point with 10 men last weekend against Wigan after losing midfielder Lee Cattermole so early in the game.

And Sunderland beat City last time out at home and I think they could get something from the game.

Prediction: 1-1
I see his point but the point with City, they are still trying to gel as a team where our team are a solid unit and that will be the difference i think from the predicted draw to a away win, 2-1 Arsenal 8)

two new CBs one who has only been with us a couple weeks, clichy looked anything but sharp of late + keeper who tbh has done well so far but is due for one of his crazy mistakes, but midfield and foward I agree.

4-0 to the Arsenal.. but one of those typical tight games. We'll score early then bite our nails for about 70 mins before getting late goals.

Can't wait for this one, mate of mine if a Sunderland fan so hopefully he'll direct to some good pubs as I think were getting up there early.

Like someone above mentioned, CANA gave us a lot of trouble last year. This year i dont really see us losing, a draw maybe but a win is essential .
