TV License Help

Post by AA23Northbank »

I have a question which I have about TV licenses:

I've basically moved into my new flat at uni with a TV (for PS3) and it doesn't have a TV point. However, I have skyplayer and can watch sky on my computer and connect it to my TV and hence watch it on my TV. Does this mean that I need a TV license?

Hope someone has an answer for this, cheers :barscarf:

The rules state that if you watch tv on any medium in this country, you need to have a licence but when they come round to ask about a tv licence, just say:" That's my computer. I don't have a telly."

I once met a bloke who worked as a tv licence inspector and he said that those tv detector vans were a bit of a myth. Most of the people they caught came from surveys where they had filled in that they had a tv and when cross-checked against the records, it showed that they didn't have a licence.

Yep you need a licence but as perryshburton said, they dont chase it up that often. Fact is though, they do try and screw students and often turn up at halls of residence.

BUT, they are NOT allowed in your room/property and are can only really look through the door. As long as your tv is out of site, they can do sod all.

But in answer to the question, yes you are breaking the law.....CRIMINAL!!!!!!!!!

thats bollox, if u are watching timeshifted programs u do not need a licience. the tv licience as yet does not apply to services u recieve online so the sky ayer is ok. it also does not apply if u only use it for dvds and gaming. the only way it applies is if u are able ti recieve transmitted signals for immediate viewing on a television set. there is no reason u need one in this case, however what the *word censored* do i prey on ur ignorance in thinking tbat iwning one requires a licience and they wi try and scare u into doing so. when they send a letter round use the pre paid envelope to say that u do not and cannot recieve said signals. they will duely ignore this and tbe process goes on and on.

however the *word censored* that b have this down as statuatory defence so if they do decixe to do ya then you will have to prove this is the case otherwise they fuck ya.

if the guy comes round tbey have a default set of questions and prey on ur ignorance to answer tell the guy to polity fuck off. they need a written court order displayed prior to questioning to force u to answer and it gies on and on.

fight the power bro

I didnt have a TV while at uni (just a computer) but because i didnt like the threatening tone of their letters i never bothered telling them that i didnt have one. Did they come round? Did they fuck... which is a shame because i fancied wasting their time. :awnker:

A quick check on the tv licence website is probably best, instead of getting everyone's opinions but no facts.

Basically, if you use your computer to watch programs as they're being broadcast, then you need a tv licence. If you are only using services like BBC iplayer, then you don't.

I'm using skyplayer but I guess I'll be using that for football/cricket on sky sports and probably will stream F1 through BBC website. May have to get one to be on the safe side
