Trivia: What might have been

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Trivia: What might have been

Post by 26may1989 »

That story that Wenger tried to sign Beckham a few years ago got me thinking, over the years which players has Wenger tried to sign for us or was strongly linked with joining Wenger's AFC? The ones I can think of:

Beckham
Torres
Babel
Eto'o
Ronaldhino
Zidane
Lizarazu
Carrick
Cech
Owen
Wright-Phillips
Dudek
Riberry
Zakora
Essien
Angulo
Kewell
Sneijder
Trezeguet
Ronaldo (the fat one)
Anelka (the second time)
Micah Richards
Malouda

YOU MISSED OUT DROGBA AND RONALDO (THE SKINNY, FALLS OVER TOO EASILY ONE!).

BUT WAYNO IS RIGHT. THE VAST MAJORITY OF PLAYERS LINKED WITH ARSENAL ARE A FIGMENT OF THE TABLOID WRITER'S IMAGINATION.

Cynicism about tabloid scum is always a good thing but Wenger is on the record about most on that list:

Beckham
Torres
Babel
Eto'o
Ronaldhino
Zidane
Lizarazu
Carrick
Cech
Wright-Phillips
Dudek
Riberry
Angulo
Kewell
Anelka (the second time)
Micah Richards

Was there really anything about Drogba and Ronaldo the Winker?

Personally I can't remember anything about Drogba but I can about Ronaldo. It was quite some time before Manure signed him though.

WENGER HAS SAID HIMSELF THAT HE CONSIDERED BUYING DROGBA WHEN HE WAS IN FRANCE BUT WAS PUT OFF BY THE FEE.

AS FOR RONALDO (THE GREASY-HAIRED, DUMMY SELLER), WE WERE DEFINATELY IN FOR HIM AT THE SAME TIME AS UNITED BUT SPORTING WERE ASKING £12 MILLION PLUS FOR THE TEENAGER - ALTHOUGH I'M NOT SURE IF THE FEE WAS THE ACTUAL STUMBLING BLOCK. THE FACT THAT UNITED HAVE SOME SORT OF LINK UP WITH THAT CLUB, AND FERGIE'S ASSISTANT IS PORTUGESE, ALSO PROBABLY PLAYED A PART IN HIS DECISION TO CHOOSE UNITED.

Don't forget AW's biggest regret, Claude Makalele.
