Arsenal Travel Club in Europe (aka Thomas Cook)

Post by MK Gould »

When I went to Paris for the CL Final (don't get jealous. I ended up watching it from the comfort of a nice pub!) I drove via the Channel Tunnel and stayed in a travel lodge type hotel. From memory it cost something like £200 for 5 of us. £40 each! Can't remember how much the Travel Club (i.e. Thomas Cook for European adventures) were charging for their 2 day trip.....but it sure as hell wasn't £40!!

And now I've put the itinery together for my next Euro trip, to Milan. Flights to Turin = £160 (2 of us paid £30 each, but the others booked later so got "stung" for £50 - and its still only £80 if you were booking today!), Car Hire = £40 (only a Fiat Grande Punto but hey, don't think we'll have much luggage!), Hotel = just over £100. So that add's up to the grand sum of £300. Which is somewhat more expensive than the 2 day trip with Arsenal Travel Club at £249. Except that ours is paying for 4 of us i.e. £75 each!! How can Thomas Cook justify such prices is beyond me. The only time its half way's worthwhile is if you are travelling alone. Otherwise, its a hell of a price to pay for having someone else do the booking!!

I hate to think how much they would charge for Moscow - and Eurotunnel & Ryanair won't be able to help on that one.......

Thinking of flying to Moscow for the final? The cheapest flights I could find for 21/5, returning on 22/5, were £276 flying with Czech Airlines via Prague. And you'd need to spend a little more to get flight times which give you a decent look round town before the match! If you'd prefer to travel direct with BA then you're looking at c£800 (looks like the major airlines are already well aware of when & where the CL Final is being held and already reflecting this in prices!). If you are prepared to stay for the week, then BA's price comes down to a more respectable £259.

I think that maybe trips to obscure places like Moscow might be one time when Thomas Cook are the best bet! Now, Rome next year might be a different story........
