Everton Away (14th November)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Away days can be what you make of them. If you have good mates with you it can be a blast having to deal with shitholes like Badison Park.
Cheers, I'm going up on the train with some mates so we'll try and have a few on the way up. I do love away days but it's funny how shit they can turn given a bad result (went to wigan last year)
There is something special about away games, havent been away for a few years myself now. Have a good one mate lets hope we win :barscarf:
You haven't been to a home game either for a few years now flash? Seen as you've got the internet and all that.

Just picked up 3 of the lower tier restricted view tickets. Haven't been to Goodison before, how bad is the view? Any worse than than the back of the stand at Anfield?

The views of the back of the lower tier of the away section is comparable with the views from the back of the old East or West lowers at Highbury.

I also always have found the Evertonians to be a very gracious bunch of supporters tbh. I was in the Gladys Street end when they did us 1-0 in the last minute (Andy Johnson was it?) and they didn't give me any sh1t and it was obvious I was Arsenal.

I will be drinking in the Carrisbrook (prob wrong spelling).
That's because they were both design by the same bloke. Archibald Leitch (?)

Also got some lower tier restricted view tickets, hope it ain't too bad. Anyone have any experience of these seats? I've heard that if you're near the back you've got the "letterbox" effect like the East Stand at Highbury?

Goodison is just an old ground, Highbury had the same problems but I wouldn't call that a sh1thole.

Hi Ben

I have been to Goodison a few times and generally enjoy the experience, it is a lot different to a day out at the Emirates or any of the new grounds, really gives you an idea what football was like 15-20 years ago (if you aren't old enough to remember). Old ground with lots of character in a really shocking part of inner city Liverpool. The £32 tickets don't give a terrible view, think they will be towards the front of the lower tier.

I havn't been to a pub before so can't help but there is a spoons 2 minutes from Lime Street Station which is a good starting point for a few cheap ones. Here are the recommendations from footballgroundguide:-

About a 15 minute walk away from the visiting supporters entrance, is the Thomas Frost pub on Walton Road. This Wetherspoon outlet, is a fair sized pub, that had a good mixture of home and away supporters, when I last visited. Rob Elmour adds; 'We found the Thomas Frost on Walton Road packed out, so we tried the Bradleys Wine Bar, which is just further down and across the road. It was very good. not a wine bar at all but a proper family run local with a good selection of beers including some real ales. Good mix of fans all very friendly.'

Peter Bennett suggests the following; 'Pubs on Walton Lane or The Spellow and Wilnslow Hotel outside Goodison are recommended.' Alcohol is served in the away section of the ground, including beer from the Club's sponsors Chang.

Tom Hughes adds 'The city centre is usually the best bet for a pre-match drink, There are hundreds of pubs available ranging from designer types to real-ale and saw dust bars. Near Lime Street Station there is the big house (the Vines) next to the Adelphi which is worth a visit. Nearer Goodison 'The Hermitage' (a friendly pub, 5/10 minutes walk up Walton Lane and under the bridge) on Queens Drive is also okay'.

There is a Wetherspoons across the road from Lime Street Station, plus at the station itself, is the Head of Steam, which is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and also has a large screen showing sporting events. Also, the nearby Crown pub also recommended to me.

As others have said away days are how you make them, bad results are annoying (+ quite common!) so don't rest your whole day on the outcome of the match. Enjoy.

Goodison is not that bad.

Now SHL that's a truly shit stadium, the fans are tossers and there is a hint of menace when you walk along the 7sisters to the station. I don't wear colours usually to away games but this is one game I go out of my way to hide colours if I'm going to the game alone. :x

Thanks for the reply and helpful tips, will be sure to try a few of those watering holes. I thought I had an obstructed view ticket, but it appears these only went on sale after I'd bought mine.

I've only ever had one terrible view at a game, it was for QPR in the East Stand at Highbury in '95, had no view of the big screens so missed the replay of Johnny Jensen's goal!

My worst view at a Prem game was at Anfield a a few years ago (1-1 draw Fabregas scoring in the last 5 minutes) in the penultimate row, when everyone stands up you can barely see half the pitch! At Villarreal 2-3 years ago it was pretty terrible, we were in the upper tier but there was a glass wall with black strip on top in front of us and the black strip went right accross the pitch, very few of the 4,000 actually saw Ade score that night.

Views not too bad no better or worse than the old east/west stand. Its a good away experience. Everton players park their cars out front and walk round greeting fans / signing autographs along the way, unlike our non contact experience. Away section facilities are the worse in premiership for a club of its stature, and the locals know it is poor. I've never come across any trouble but still be careful where you park as they've tighten up on their permit parking restictions, and the reputation of the local youths isn't without good reason. As long as we win and you ain't too cocky you can have good banter with the bluenoses.
