Cesc

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Even though his performance wasn't good enough but we STILL have the best midfielder in the world. If Cesc plays on his day no one can stop him. Just wait for he gains his fitness after his recent injury.

+ 40m deal isn't good enough for a world-class midfielder can play in his top form for at least 7 or 8 years.

I might be wrong or it may even have already been mentioned, but the handball which led to the penalty. Didn’t Cesc do exactly the same thing in a game last season, but get away with it?

I've thought about Cesc’s captaincy a good bit lately. Exactly like THBW14 before him, a great and very talented player but a terrible captain that has only been given the armband as a Band-Aid after being refused a move to the Whores. Worrying thing is, I cannot see ANY natural or born leaders in that team with the exception of possibly Vermaelen? And I’m not 100% sure about him either TBH.

Ultimately, what will Cesc’s captaincy with us be remembered for? If we are being brutally honest, I fear he will be remembered not only for some of the dazzling football he has played with us, but also for winning no trophies (as captain) and being the first Arsenal captain to lose the NLD at home in 17 years, and lost it in a humiliating fashion...

Which leads me to my next point; the spirit of the team. Or lack thereof.

What I found the most unpalatable thing on Saturday was the nature of the defeat. I can accept being beaten by a better team that has outplayed us but I simply cannot accept being beaten by a team that looked dead in the water at half time, and then only got back into it because WE LET THEM. Contrary to what Twitchy Redknapp’s personal fan club (or “Goals on Sundayâ€

I went to Fulham v City on Sunday too and saw the great PV4 in action. It reminded me that back when he first joined, you could tell instantly despite his age that he would be the next Arsenal captain.

And that was with Keown, Bould, Parlour, Petit, Seaman etc as all viable backups.

Now we struggle to muster up TV5 as a name. Then again, who ARE the inspiring captains of other teams? Terry maybe but he seems to divide his camp (and their wives legs), United switch between Ferdinand, Giggs, Scholes etc. Tevez? Just to keep him happy (was Kolo stripped of it?). Gerrard? Seems to want away half the time. I couldn't even name you Villa's captain now Larsson's gone. Spurs? Didn't they have Gallas on Saturday?

My point is it's symptomatic of the modern game - all players are quite cushty and willing to put blame back on the manager.
