I agree that he tries to be a worthwhile contributor, but his effort in tracking-back, his effort in really stretching to close someone down, is shit.

His general awareness of what's going on is very poor, and what he contributes going forward is nearly nil, and defensively is also poor.

So, Marc apart from all that you've listed, he is quite a valuable addition to the squad..

I would say that yes he tries to the best of his ability. He doesn't track back well because he has no positional sense and no pace. Like last night showed once again he is a "responder" - he sees the action too late and can only try and respond to it. The best players anticipate the play.
